News: Marvel Rivals shares developer insights on matchmaking and ranking system

To counter growing skepticism over whether Marvel Rivals’ ranked mode is rigged, the developers released an 18-minute video on X (formerly Twitter) that walks through the detailed mechanics behind its ranking and matchmaking systems. Lead Combat Designer Zhiyong breaks down how rank progression is calculated and why many matches feel uneven. Find the link to their post here. The core of the system works like this: Your performance on a hero is compared against other players of the same hero and rank. Averages are drawn for your team’s combined skill level to estimate match difficulty. If your team is stronger than the opponent’s, you earn fewer points for a win but lose more for a defeat.

All competitive games use a match making algorithm to calculate players ranks and placements. Marvel Rivals isn’t the only game to have this kind of issue come up in their games. There’s a term called “Elo Hell” that other players refer to. Players from both sides of the argument cry out whether they want skill based match making or not. It is interesting to note that most companies who run an experiment state that players often enjoy skill based match making more often than not.
