News: PS5 announces price increases in the US due to economic environment factors

Sony officially announced on August 20, 2025 that due to a challenging economic environment including factors like inflation, tariffs, and rising production costs, it would raise the price of all PlayStation 5 console models in the United States starting August 21, 2025 PlayStation.Blog. The updated pricing structure introduces a $50 increase across the board. The standard PS5 now retails at $549.99. TheS5 Digital Edition is set at *499.99. The PS5 Pro will cost $749.99.

This price adjustment reflects the broader trend of hardware manufacturers recalibrating prices in response to global economic pressures. For the U.S. market where Sony had previously held prices steady this represents a significant policy shift. Consumers and industry watchers alike will likely monitor whether this is the start of a broader trend affecting gaming hardware prices across key markets. Luckily, the “recommended retail prices for PlayStation 5 accessories remain unchanged.”

Looks like I won’t be getting a ps5 anytime soon.

I’m glad I got my PS5 Slim when I did, but I’d find most people would be hard pressed to pay that price now when the PS6 is estimated to be 2 years away from now.

Absolutely nothing will change my mind about this being a total shameless cash grab from sony.
