News: Sony accuses Tencent over copyright infringement. Are all robot dinosaur games in scrutiny?

Sony Interactive Entertainment has launched a bold legal challenge against Tencent, accusing the Chinese technology giant of creating a near clone of its beloved Horizon franchise in the form of the upcoming game Light of Motiram. One of the most striking components of Sony’s case is its emphasis on consumer confusion. The complaint argues that Tencent’s marketing materials including style, character design, and iconography so closely resemble those of Horizon that gamers could reasonably mistake Light of Motiram for a bona fide entry in Sony’s series.

In response, Tencent has pushed back hard, calling Sony’s lawsuit “startling” and accusing it of overreaching by trying to claim ownership over broad genre conventions. The company also questions the legal grounding of the complaint’s claims given that Light of Motiram is not yet released and insists that suing over an unreleased game constitutes speculative damage.
