Why so much stutter?

Never wrote on a forum before lol. I think it’s awesome that many of you are here to just offer help and advice on PC related stuff. Thank you for that. Before I start here are my PC specs:

Msi MPG B550 gaming plus motherboard
AMD RADEON XR 9070 XT
msi MPG A1000G PCIE5 power supply
AMD Ryzen 5 5600X
WD_BLACK SN850X NVMe SSD
msi MAG coreliquid 360R V2
PNY XLR8 gaming 16GB 3600mhz MD32GK2D4360018XRGB x 4
ACER PREDATOR X32 X2bmiiphx

This is my first time building a PC and I don’t know too much about this field. I recently upgraded from an RTX 4060 to the Radeon 9070. I also upgraded my display. I have ATT fiber and have optimized my connection as best I can through ATT modem.

Yes I understand that AM5 is the way now but this is what I got. It would cost way too much to upgrade now.

Why do I get so much stutter in games?? Games like squad or hell let loose is almost unplayable because how bad the stutter is when you aim in or turn. I’m actually pissed off about this because I have spent WAY more on the computer than originally intended. I’m playing on medium settings. I’ve tried messing with in game settings, Adrenalin settings and bios settings. The best I can do is to make it only stutter less.

I have a 5800X3D coming in a few days. If that doesn’t fix it, guess I’m going back to Xbox. Ugh.

Thank you for any advice and help!

Before changing any hardware, I’d try to narrow the problem down a bit. Does it only stutter the first time you load into a match, or does it continue every match after that? Does it mainly happen when you quickly turn or aim, or do you notice it even while standing still? When it stutters, does your FPS actually drop, or does the frame rate stay high even though it feels choppy? Also, when you swapped from the RTX 4060 to the 9070 XT, did you completely erase the old drivers before installing the new ones?

Looking at your specs, the first thing that stood out to me wasn’t actually the GPU—it was the CPU. Squad and Hell Let Loose are some of the most CPU- and cache-intensive shooters out there, so a Ryzen 5600X can definitely become the limiting factor, especially when you’re rapidly turning and the game is streaming in new players and assets.

I also noticed you’re running 64 GB as four 16 GB sticks. That’s not necessarily a problem, but four DIMMs can be a little harder on Ryzen’s memory controller than two. I’d make sure A-XMP is enabled in the BIOS and verify that your memory is actually running at 3600 MT/s.

Since you’ve already got a 5800X3D on the way, I’d install that before spending another dollar. The extra L3 cache on that CPU is exactly what helps in games like Squad and Hell Let Loose. It allows the processor to keep much more game data on the CPU, which often reduces frame-time spikes and smooths out gameplay.

If you’re still getting the same stuttering after the CPU upgrade, then I’d start looking harder at the memory configuration. At that point, it might be worth testing a 2×32 GB kit instead of 4×16 GB just to see if the four-stick setup is contributing to the issue. But I’d definitely give the 5800X3D a chance first, because I think that’s the upgrade most likely to make the biggest difference.

After you install the new CPU let us know what kind of results you had.

One other thought that crossed my mind—have you ruled out the connection side of things? Since you mainly play Squad and Hell Let Loose, I’d be curious if this happens on every server or just certain ones. Those games are pretty server-dependent, so a busy server, high ping, or packet loss can sometimes feel like hardware stuttering. If it’s only happening on specific servers or during really heavy firefights, it may not be your PC at all. It’d be worth paying attention to whether the issue follows you from server to server before chasing more hardware changes.
