Stop buying pre-builts! Which single upgrade actually saved your aging PC? šŸ› ļø

Yo guys,

I was thiiiiis close to just throwing my entire desktop in the trash and buying a whole new pre-built. My frame rates in newer titles have been tanking, and the stuttering is driving me insane. But before I emptied my bank account, I started looking into which individual parts are actually holding me back.

Is it the CPU bottlenecking my new GPU? Or is my old RAM just not keeping up with modern workloads?

I was scoutng for some technical advice on prioritizing parts and found this Desktop Component Upgrade Guide on maximizing performance without starting over. It’s a pretty smart breakdown of the ā€œorder of operationsā€ for upgrades—like when a simple NVMe SSD swap or a BIOS update for a new CPU makes more sense than a total platform rebuild.

It got me thinking about my own roadmap. I’m leaning towards just swapping the platform (Mobo/CPU/RAM) and keeping my current case and PSU to save some cash for a better GPU later.

What about you guys?

  1. What’s the one upgrade you did that gave you the biggest ā€œholy crapā€ moment in performance?
  2. Do you think 32GB of RAM is officially the new ā€œminimumā€ for gaming, or can we still survive on 16GB?
  3. Is it worth upgrading to a PCIe 5.0 drive yet, or is the heat/cost still too high for the average gamer?

Let’s talk shop. I’d rather spend $500 wisely than $2000 on a whole new box if I don’t have to.

Peace! :victory_hand:

The speed of gen 5 drives is overkill, and overpriced. And I think that 16gb will be enough because of the shortage.

Spot on. It’s refreshing to hear some actual common sense in a world full of marketing hype!

I’m with you 100% on the Gen 5 drives—paying double the price for speeds that only shave 0.5 seconds off a loading screen feels like a total trap for most gamers. A solid Gen 4 drive is still the absolute sweet spot for 99% of us.

Regarding the 16GB RAM—it’s definitely the smart ā€˜shortage move.’ But I’ve got to ask: are you noticing any stuttering in the latest

I got 32gb of ddr4 just at ddr4 prices were going up for $70. And I’m glad I did because the ddr4 prices went up and then ddr5. So I think I’m at least a little lucky.

Oh man, I’ve been there. Swapped my old HDD for an NVMe SSD and suddenly my 2018 rig felt like a time machine :rocket:

TL;DR: Start with storage or GPU before nuking the whole setup.
16GB RAM still survives, 32GB is comfy, and PCIe 5.0? Meh… unless you’re trying to feel fancy. :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:
