This does come with a backplate, however as to whether this is an "exact reference" layout, I am uncertain.  From all of the marketing material photos and reviews, this does appear to be reference, but you may want to followup with your own research here.

Is this video card SLI ready? Is it overclocked and good cooling?

It is SLI ready as William G answered.  I found you can download the GB OC utility and squeeze some more MHz out of this without altering the cooling setup.  Now just to preface this, I do not take responsibility for any modifications you make, but I was able to add 220 MHz and maintain stability and sub-85 degree temps.  This brought my 3DMark score from 9996 to 11110.

This looks like a reference card to me, are we sure this picture is right? Doesn't look like Gigabyte to me.

Oddly, Gigabyte does not list a reference-design GTX 980 on their website (as of the time I am writing this). That has given me pause about getting one of these myself... but I bet they just don't have their site fully updated yet. The launch was just this past Friday, after all.

How much power does this need. Would a 600w work or do you need more?

In general, Yes, you should be just fine :).

It depends on your system, overclocking and such. TDP of the 980 is set at 165 where is 780Ti is 250. Consider your fans, motherboard, CPU, harddrives and any other peripherals, then add in 165. I wouldn't suggest going above 480 Watts total for a 600W PSU (that's 80% load).

i7-4790 stock 88W
Mobo (roughly 20W, depends if you're powering anything USB)
GTX 780 150W
Fans 6x7W = 42W
1 HDD ~ 7W per = 7W
1 SSD ~ 3W 88

= 310 W ... that's 52% of a 600W PSU under full load (Stock clocked).

Remember, once you start overclocking and messing with voltages, your wattage is going to increase rather quickly.

Will these new cards support the display port 1.3 standard that was just released once we start seeing monitors that will support it?
