cool for a cooler
Pros: Temp, noise, durability, warranty and mounting. let me say some words about duabilty and warranty. Noctua is know the world over for build quality and taking care of its customers, 6 year warranty. that alone makes the higher price worth while. noise, also famous for noctua is their lack of noise. this unit run in single or dual fan is no exception. quiet with only a slight high pitch whine. versus my zalman cnps9900 max, which was a jet engine. temps. this thing shines under load. changing out my 1 year old zalman to this i lost 13c off my load temps while using occt. at idle it shaved off about 5c. mounting, a dream. the included kits for amd and intel are solid mounting, and exceptionally easy to use. you really have to try hard to screw up the mounting process. the included noctua paste is decent as well, but again if you want to change the paste or need to perform system maintenance you can attach and detach this tower with ease. can say enough good about it. i am sold on noctua, as my case fans die, they will be replaced with noctua fans.
Cons: I only list a con because i have to force the issue . i mounted the cooler to a sabertooth x79 with all ram slots populated, channel c-d on the rear of the board when using the noctua in dual fan mode it will touch the side of your ram stick. this is because noctua suggest for performance use the fan with the thicker rubber mounts. this is not a big deal as the cooler doesnt push the ram, it touches it on the side. not even really a con but like i said i had to dig and dig very deep.
Overall Review: Here is some breakdown, I replaced my zalman cnps9900max cooler that died 1 year and 1month from purchase. Of course eh? i am aware that comparing the noctua to the zalman isnt fair but i want you the buyer to get detailed info. first off if your running stock or just idle you will not notice huge gains in lower temps the zalman kept my 3930k 4.0g at 1.168vcore at about 33c idle, the noctua keeps it 28c. this is roughly at 20c house temp. the cpu isnt doing anything and the fans are low speed so the coolers seem very similar. where this cooler shines is when you oc higher or load the cpu up. i ran occt avx linpak for 8.5 hours on the zlaman and the hottest core was 67c, cpu temp was around 60c. i put the noctua on and ran the same occt test for the same amount of time again under about 20c house temp. and my hottest core was 51c with a overall cpu temp at 45c. least to say i was impressed. also you should know that the fan profile was asus ai suite thermal armor turbo on both coolers. the zalman was running 1300+rpms while the noctua barley ramped up past 800 rpms. so i know that if i re-ran the test with the noctua at 12v it would be cooler yet. next, is since my zalman died just out of its warranty, i was sad that it didnt last. this is the main reason i chose the noctua, if stuff is only going to last for its warranty period then i choose a 6 year warranty period. plus if i ever change socket noctua will supply me the mounting parts. the support from this company makes it all worth it. thats my experience, hopefully it helps you in your decision making process. if you are just looking for a cooler to replace the stock cooler for your chip but dont want to oc or push crazy loads, get the coolermaster hyper 212, you dont need to spend the extra money. if you're going for performance, have the cash or want the support from a company for a long time choose the noctua. thanks for reading. Erik
what else can be said
Pros: well, like the title says what else can be said? its fast, its big, it mounts easily, it computes, overclocks, hyperthreads. whatever. to spare you the long review about specs and ect, ill talk about my choice and why i took this cpu. i chose this cpu for its hyper threading capability and its language works better for adobe cs6. i edit photos and movies, this cpu was a perfect match for me. render speeds are down and adobe takes advantage of the hyper threading language used by intel. so long story short, are you an editor or creator? then this is your cpu. if your a game,r then most games dont fully utilize a quad core let alone a 6 core. save your money and get a great quad core for gaming. end
Cons: noting to report. packing is sound mounting is great.
lightining fast
Pros: I just wrote a review on the 335 series intel ssd. i will sum up everything in this review. ssd is crazy fast. it is very light and has less heat. it has wonderful mounting options. side screws and bottom screw holes. the package comes with everything you need to make it work, sata 6 cable, 3.5 to 2.5 converter, love it. the only difference between this 520 series and the 335 is the rated speeds both in the read and write and on the 4k iops. i bought this 520 series for my OS and programs drive to make everything nice and quick. it does exactly that. love it. blinding speeds, it takes longer for my system to post beep than it does for windows to boot. and post isnt even that long. i am exceedingly happy with switching to ssd for my OS and programs drive, adobe cs6 opens so fast i soil myself. now i am impatient when using a computer with a spinner hdd and have to wait for the disc to spin up and then start to send data. dont be fooled by people saying the write cycles are less than spinning hdds and all that jazz. with some simple research you will see tests that show the write cycles of an ssd are just as long or on pare with bearing life of a spinner hdd. there are sometimes that things fail quickly or right out of the box, its life rma and move on.
Cons: well not really a con but worth mentioning. as with any new technology the price is high. if you like to be on the edge of everything then price is usually not an object for you. if your a bit cautious with your cash, wait a bit and the price will drop and you'll get to bask in the ssd speed goodness.
ridiculous speed
Pros: like the title says. ssd drives are ridiculous when it comes to speed. saving you the physics lesson as to why that is, I love this unit. i purchased it for my editing rig and placed it in the edit/render drive position to speed up rendering and exporting times. it does exactly that, i can render out long time lines in fractional amounts of time when compared to older editing platforms and spinning hard drives. I am using adobe cs6 PP. I love the shift into the direction of ssd, i have no idea why people complain about write cycles and integrity ssd is just as long lasting as a spinner at a fraction of the weight and heat. love the mounting options, got threads in holes on the sides and on the bottom which allows for sticking 2 drives in one 3.5" to 2.5" converter in a cooler master haf 932 case. cant say enough good about this drive and the direction technology is taking. plus if you follow newegg tv and other tech shows on the web you will notice that the intel drives come underrated for speed on their paperwork. so that means when you get it the performance is even better. love all the options that come in the box, sata 6 cable, 3.5 to 2.5 converter, molex to sata power. Intel and other manufactures please never stop giving those essential pieces, they make life so much easier when building and solving problems.
Cons: i will not remove any eggs for this as its not neweggs fault. it may possibly be intels fault, but a word of waring for you adobe editors out there choosing a intel ssd for your render/export drive, when you export DNxHD in quicktime format it will always give you a failure. I have searched the adobe forums and creative cow as well as others, this can not initiate error seems to be par for the course when exporting quicktime. I have not tried other quick time codec formats i like to work in dnxhd but this is something to consider when building your rig and thinking about putting a intel ssd in your render export scheme. perhaps it will be solved soon by apple or by firmware upgrades but as of writing this be aware of this issue.
great hdd
Pros: its a hdd. it spins up, stores and retrieves data. So far i have had no issues with speed dropped data or anything else. standard 3.5 mounting size, has a few options for screws and mounts up solid to your case. can say much else unless i edit this review in about 5 years when the warranty wears out. i got this 7200 rpm disc for video editing projects so that the disc can spit out the data at the rate i need it. anything slower and my editing rig would not be production efficient. the data rate is good enough for me as i edit single camera streams. it has no problems spitting out 1~2 streams of red 4k and handles everything else with ease. i can get about 6 streams of avchd before i get choppy playback in adobe PPro. so for me this hdd is great, and with the price per gigabyte, for large storage its a no brainier.
Cons: Noisy! good lord, I have a HAF932 adv case with a total of 5 mountable hard drives. i filled all slots with these black hdds, and man did they transfer vibrations to the case and create noise. now, that is 5 hard drives mounted in the hdd bay so of course there is going to be vibrations and noise. the noise is not excessive but noticeable and if your building a pc with large amounts of storage you should be aware of the issue. with the haf 932 fully loaded it will transfer the vibrations to your table or desk that you have your system set on. be aware of that too. this issue is of course not worry some if you have only 1 drive or if your soft mount your hdds. even with 5 drives its not overly loud, i am just picky and want my rig to be as close to silent as possible. since the noise is not bad i will not remove any stars for it. this is a great drive.
Overall Review: great hdds. they deliver the data at a rate my pc components can handle. my workflow is fast and efficient when editing videos.
nice tight connection
Pros: exactly what it says it is. dual link dvi cable. great transfer only limited by the capacity of copper. a great solid connection versus hdmi. worth the price.
Cons: maybe its just me but when i first handled the cables i felt the ends were so light i was concered with the quality of them being a bit chinsey. however, 2 months after pruchase and there are no issues either visually on screen or with the cables and thier mounting hardware. i just have a ridiculus standard.
Overall Review: get dual link only if you need resolution higher than 1080. if your running 1080 or below stick with single link that comes with your monitor. also, just a bit of personal experience, hdmi and dvi are the same thing in terms transfer bandwith, the reason i always chose dvi over hdmi is with the screw mounts there is no tighter connection other than soldering. just my thoughts.
