Solid Quality
Pros: As you would expect MSI delivers on what is a flagship product and an excellent 'in' to the LGA 2011-v3 and DDR4. X99 chipset speaks for itself. The quality of the build and packaging, the thoughtfulness of the cables included are all top-tier, so there's really not much else to say other than it is what you would expect in an enthusiast offering. Plenty of #YOLO #SWAG included with the mobo.
Cons: As some have mentioned, the 'Killer' LAN thing is a pain in the boys. It is a good concept and a good thought, sure, but it just isn't solid enough to be reliable. The fix is pretty popular and easy enough to find; reverting the re-branded 'Killer' back to its Qualcomm/ Aethros roots, but even doing this I noticed a definite performance drop compared to my ASUS Z77 Sabertooth LAN offering (a la LGA 1155); there's the drop in the egg.
Overall Review: Looking sideways at the competition, I feel MSI has the most complete offering in the X99 chipset all things told. I'm certainly not wild about the odd LAN performance hit, but looking at some of the problems other boards are having with quality and BIOS issues I went with MSI because it seemed the safer choice and I wasn't disappointed. Everything worked the first time it was plugged in and set up - not much more you can ask.
An answer to an un-asked question
Pros: It's a liquid cooler AIO solution.
Cons: Extremely disappointing. It is AM4 'compatible,' but lacks the mounting bracket needed to utilize the AMD specific mounting plate. The instructions list all of the package contents, and actually show that there is no AMD bracket included. They do, however, show how you must use it to mount the CPU cooler. Also, the build quality falls squarely below similar products from brands you would recognize, like Corsair. The fan holes were off, and made fan and radiator mounting incomprehensibly difficult for something so straightforward.
Overall Review: I don't know if this was a poorly written product advert, or somewhere along the assembly line someone was just supposed to stick an AMD mounting plate in there...but this product is NOT AM4 ready as-shipped. For some reason, the mounting surface of the fans is made asymmetrically on one side, which gives you only one way of mounting them relative to the rad (without dealing with the'innovative' shape). Meaning - you don't have a flat surface that the fan mounts to the rad with on both sides - two opposite corners are high, and the other two opposite corners are low on one side, which in theory would let you...do what? I don't exactly know. They included little 'standoffs' that would level out the two corners made intentionally low and bring them back into parallel with the high ones, but that just brings me back to - 'the answer to an un-asked question.' They managed to needlessly complicate, and diminish production value of, a product with a lot of competition and track record. I honestly don't know why anyone would get this when you can just get something that works from Corsair, Thermaltake, or CoolerMaster.
Great 27" fully featured monitor...
Pros: In the 27" form factor, 1920x1080 is a great resolution to run, great screen size for a lot of people, and performance wise this monitor is all business. 144hz over HDMI, 165hz over DisplayPort. Gsync compatible. 1ms response time. It doesn't have USB ports, but that seems to be more of a design choice and not a down-doot knock at its failings. MSI went in on a monitor that is high performing - everything it needs to be, it is.
Cons: The 'ahhh' happens when you realize that the monitor screen does not extend all the way to the bezel like the advertisements show. There is a small border around the visible screen - not much, but enough to notice. So I started clicking around in the monitor menu to adjust the screen borders/ scaling like you would have done a hundred times before on the most hum-drum of monitors out there...only you can't. The functionality isn't even in the menus. So - that is where the 'refurbished' comes in; these were the ones that they realized weren't made to spec regarding the ultra thin bezel.
Overall Review: At less then 200 bucks it is insane not to get this. It's got everything a $300-400 monitor needs to be great, but you are getting it at a fraction of the price. 165hz, 1ms, Gsync, 27", and good brightness/ contrast. Need I say more?
Love this card
Pros: No special cables or operating system requirements with this RAID controller. Built my first 4x8TB HDD RAID 0 and PassMark'd it for ~660MB/s read and write.
Cons: There is ZERO effort invested in setup documentation. There are READMEs in the driver folders, but even these are buried and really don't provide much descriptive information about what to install, why, and how.
Overall Review: It is worth your time if you want a basic (up to) 4 drive RAID for cheap. There is a severe lack of personal use RAID hardware out and about, but this puts RAID in reach for a lot of people - which is sweet!
The quality I'll always recommend
Pros: Little things like having the holes in exactly the right place with sharp threads, having fans that have clearly labeled rotation and flow direction arrows, versatile mounting options, and plenty of included hardware to mount the rad and fans in different orientations...are really things you don't value enough until you don't have them. I made the mistake of going with a re-branded setup for a GIGABYTE Aorus themed build, and it sucked. Hard, dirty, sloppy suckage. This bolted right in, allowed me the orientation I wanted in my test bench case (FAN|RAD|FAN), and went together without issue on an AM4 socket setup right out of the box. Would do again
Cons: None
Overall Review: Would definitely buy again.
