Fantastic CPU for first AMD build

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X - Ryzen 7 5000 Series Vermeer (Zen 3) 8-Core 3.8 GHz Socket AM4 105W Desktop Processor - 100-100000063WOF
AMD Ryzen 7 5800X - Ryzen 7 5000 Series Vermeer (Zen 3) 8-Core 3.8 GHz Socket AM4 105W Desktop Processor - 100-100000063WOF

Pros: - Hits 4.95GhZ with Ryzen auto-OC software, using Corsair H100i at 60C - Civ 6 map load times are under 20 seconds - Hardly breaks a sweat for most of my applications, and throttles itself quite effectively

Cons: - Civ 6 multiplayer is still laggy thanks to other players running on potatoes (single player AI turn time is insanely fast, however) ^ Obviously this is not a real con of the CPU

Overall Review: This was my first AMD build after ~15 years of Intel. Upgraded from the 6600k, and this thing is incredible. I was lucky and got one within a four minute window on November 6 (day after launch) before they sold out again. I haven't really put it through a rigorous test yet, but I'm confident it will destroy whatever games and A/V applications I throw at it.

Most Critical Review

Build Quality

Rosewill THOR V2 ATX Full Tower Gaming PC Computer Case, Supports: E-ATX & XL-ATX, 4 Dual-Speed Fans, 10 Expansion Slots
Rosewill THOR V2 ATX Full Tower Gaming PC Computer Case, Supports: E-ATX & XL-ATX, 4 Dual-Speed Fans, 10 Expansion Slots

Pros: Huge; lots of room for airflow and expansion USB 3.0 Fan controllers can be linked to fans of your choice Tons of cable management options Tool-less hard drive brackets and optical bays Removable air filters on bottom for PSU and optional fan Huge fans

Cons: Side fan has no LED array; front is the only one that does (can't even see the top fan from outside) USB 3.0 is an extension cable that needs to be routed to the back of the MB Air fins on top feel cheap and don't seem to serve a purpose other than for show. They also don't open up very far at all, and the slider doesn't control them all uniformly. I guess it's good for sending air back at at angle instead of straight up, but I don't see the point. Hard drive bays themselves aren't removable. They are placed sideways, which is nice, but having the entire bay removable (instead of just the brackets) would make GFX installation much easier (think Antec DF-85) Warped metal on the bottom/front of the case. It is preventing the side panels from lining up properly with the thumb screws, causing them to strip and warp, and leaving gaps in the case. Front panel is not aligned properly, also as a result. A couple of small plastic pieces broke off bottom of case, not sure what

Overall Review: The warped metal mentioned above does not appear to be shipping damage, as the bowing is out, not inward as if from a drop. It appears to have been stressed. If it were just a dent that didn't affect the workings of the case, that would be acceptable. But this issue is present on both sides, and leaves significant gaps in the case, stresses the screws, and makes the entire thing rattle as a result of poor contact. I also saw reviews where some of the cases came with correct internal USB 3 adapters; mine does not. You would think their manufacturing would be uniform, but I guess not. The features of the case are fine; a couple tweaks could have made it better, but overall it fits its function very well. However, due to the damage I will attempt to replace or refund it. Hopefully this is just an error, and not indicative of the standard manufacturing quality.

Tricky install but fantastic cooling

CORSAIR iCUE H100i RGB PRO XT, 240mm Radiator, Dual 120mm PWM Fans, Software Control, Liquid CPU Cooler, CW-9060043-WW LGA 1700 Compatible

Pros: - Keeps my 5800X at 60C during 4.95GhZ clocks - Looks cool - Quiet fans for the most part - Even with my mistake during the install, it works beautifully (see other thoughts)

Cons: - This was my first build with an all-in-one liquid cooler, so it was a bit tricky to install (this mainly stems from the fact that everything is connected in the box, and the cover on the CPU contact portion does NOT like to stay on, leading to much caution to prevent smearing the thermal paste) - Make sure your case has an ability to mount it (my CM HAF X could mount it on top with screws, but not the recommended number of screws by Corsair)

Overall Review: I initially installed the CPU pump head upside down (likely not a functional problem, just visual), so I removed it and flipped the orientation. You don't have a lot of mounting configurations possible, depending on the case you're using. During this reconfig, I obviously smeared some of the thermal paste. However, it didn't seem to make a difference in the end, and my CPU is hitting far higher clocks than I expected, and still staying at 60C. Fantastic cooling.

Excellent PSU

CORSAIR RMx Series RM850x CP-9020180-NA 850 W ATX12V / EPS12V 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Full Modular Power Supply
CORSAIR RMx Series RM850x CP-9020180-NA 850 W ATX12V / EPS12V 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Full Modular Power Supply

Pros: - I read another review about the main line being on a relay, and sure enough, I can hear it as well - Plenty of connectors, and of course, all modular - Don't think I have ever heard the fan turn on - Comes with mounting screws

Cons: - Main 24 pin ATX cable was a huge pain to unplug from the board when I needed to. It's good that it's a tight fit, but this was the only time I was worried about damaging something during my build

Overall Review: This is definitely a high quality and reliable PSU. I gave myself plenty of overhead for future upgrades (hello, 6800XT when in stock), and I fully expect this to be incredibly stable for many years. My wife didn't like how many of the modular cables I didn't end up using

Solid board with good features

MSI MPG B550 GAMING EDGE WIFI AM4 AMD B550 SATA 6Gb/s ATX AMD Motherboard
MSI MPG B550 GAMING EDGE WIFI AM4 AMD B550 SATA 6Gb/s ATX AMD Motherboard

Pros: - Good instructions - Plenty of fan headers and SATA - Solid construction, never felt like I was breaking the board -BIOS flashing for Zen 3 CPUs was quite easy. I followed the directions in the MSI instruction video, and everything went smoothly. Of note, I did this before installation into my case, and it was a huge pain to unplug the 24 pin ATX cable from the board so I could properly install - M.2 2 (the PCIe 3.0 one) worked right away with my boot drive (I wasn't sure it would as I had a lot of other PCIe devices connected) - BIOS is easy to use, intuitive UI and easily accessed settings (Dragon software could take note) - Works great with my Corsair liquid CPU cooler

Cons: - Dragon software center could use some UI/UX work. Setting RGB profiles isn't as easy as I'd hoped, but at the end of the day I don't really care about it - Had one issue with installing the M.2 in the PCIe 4.0 slot, where it was apparently improperly seated, even though the pins were all in, and the standoffs were aligned. Wouldn't detect in BIOS, which caused a seriously laggy boot failure loop. Fixed by reseating M.2 and all worked great. (Thankfully the FROZR heatspreader is reuseable) - Does not come with standoffs

Overall Review: I ended up choosing this board over an X570 in similar price range for a couple reasons: faster RAM speeds (thanks to B550 being the newer chipset), more fan headers, and generally better I/O ports. It doesn't hurt that it looks cool, too.

Pros: Read/write speeds that actually approach the advertised maximums Quieter than previous SATA optical drives Face and button are streamlined and not flamboyantly in the way of your fingers

Cons: Tray feels slightly cheap/unstable when opened, but it is something that I have noticed on nearly all optical drives these days.

Overall Review: I have been searching for a decent replacement to my brandless, 6-year-old IDE optical drive that I bought for $20 in 2005, and it even writes DL disks. Every SATA drive that I purchased was getting read speeds of under 10x, from a variety of brands. This drive gets 30x + on rip rates, consistently. Obviously it takes a little time to get up there, but it actually reaches high speeds, and very quietly too. I am very satisfied with the drive's initial performance, and I now have yet another ASUS product that hasn't disappointed me.
