Does the drive come with a usb cable and if it doesn't which one will I need to buy?

The external hard drive does come with the necessary USB cable to plug into any compatible USB port. The cable itself has a male USB 3 type A connector on one end and a male USB 3 micro-b 5-pin connector on the other end and is about 18 inches in length.

I have a WD Elements 2TB USB drive.  It has worked with several computers and never failed to work with any computer.  I have helped set up a couple of Dell desktop computers at my church.  They have worked with every USB drive I've plugged in to them.  I haven't tried that particular combination of drive and computer.  I've never been struck by lightning either.

A family member has an old school pc with winxpsp3 32 bit.  Will this external drive be seen on this system?  Thanks

XP Size Limitation is 2TB, so yes, it should work, my disk is at work or I would test it for you. Disks exceeding 2TB in size must use GPT instead of MBR, XP does not natively support GPT unless the drive manufacturer provides a driver.

Does it transfer folders or just files?  With thousands of files, transferring by files would become a disorganized mess.

If you have Windows 10 or a Mac, use the backup function to backup. If your want to backup up your documents, just drag the folder over to the drive. Yes, to answer your question, you can just drag a folder over and the files would follow, just make sure you are copying the folder and not just the shortcut.

I LOVE newegg, but cannot stand how many drives don't specify the disc RPM.  It's such a vital spec.  Is this 5400 or 7200?  Can I possibly get this 3GB to go 7200 RPM ?  Why I have to ask this is beyond me, but any help would be appreciated!  :)

The Western Digital Elements series are 5400 rpm.  I have used them for DVR storage drives for 3-4 years and haven't had any problems.  I also use one for Adobe Light Room backup storage.  For faster applications like real time video, the 5400 rpm isn't really fast enough.  Just depends on your application.  For portable use with a laptop, 5400 pulls less current and yield longer battery life.
