does this have to be connected to the router?

Accepted Answer

Since it is an extender, It has to be connected to your router and it is connected by a WiFi connection.  The yellow Ethernet port is used to connect any device not having WiFi capability to the network through the extender.

Question 2

Can you connect more than one of these extenders to a router? My house is an L shape with the router in the center, but both ends have weaker signals. So I was thinking I would need two.

We basically have the same layout.  I purchased 2 or these and put one in each end.  Both work without issue.  However they will show up as separate WiFi connections on you device.  I used the same password for both extenders and the router.  So once set up for all 3 connections, my devices just automatically choose which network based on signal strength and will swap networks automatically if I change ends of the house.

will this effect a router can i just connect this to just the wifi network to set it up?

Yes.  When you initially plug it in, it will give you an SSID that you connect to.  Once you are connected to the EX6120 via wifi, it will allow you to adjust all the settings...including connecting to your router's SSID.  I set it up through wifi from my phone with no network cable plugged in.
