Works for Gigabyte GA-MA785G-UD3H
Pros: Works on my Gigabyte GA-MA785G-UD3H running WHS with Western Digital caviar green 2TB drives. Installed using included CD with no problems. Has driver for Server2003 (WHS).
Cons: For SOME, not for me: SATA connectors face the side of the computer case, not the front. Thus your computer cables will have to bend 90, just same as a motherboard with sata connectors facing up, not on edge. The alternative, as seen on the Rocket 620, is to face the front of the case, and thus the drives, giving a "direct" connection between board and drives. Trade-off: 620 gives cleaner look, but the PESA230 provides easier access once installed when you have a number of other cards installed.
Overall Review: This is NOT a RAID card, but I didn't want one. I had originally bypassed this card due to the review that stated it had problems with Gigabyte boards. But when the Highpoint Rocket 620 blue screened my server on large transfers, I reconsidered (see below). This card appears to work (several large xfers done, no problem; time will tell). Manufacturer tech support: Highpoint: 2 months later, still waiting for an answer. Koutech: Given the "doesn't work" review, I contacted Koutech USA. 7 hours later received a HUMAN's ack that the question would be looked at. 24 hours later, I had an answer with 3 motherboards (Asus, SuperMicro, Gigabyte) that this card had been tested on. OK, not my specific motherboard, but can't expect EVERY model to be tested. Given a card that did what I wanted (added 2 more sata ports for my server as the MB only provided 6), has the driver for my OS, AND RESPONSIVE tech support, I can recommend this card.
1 Year Warranty?
Pros: None
Cons: 1 year warranty? That's a "warranty"? Until companies start offering decent warranties again, as in minimum 3 year, I'll stick to the brands that stand behind their product.
Overall Review: Hitachi Deskstars (even if some call them Deathstars) come with a 3 year warranty. If enough people take their business to manufacturers that offer decent warranties, other companies will have to step up to compete.
Daily Use
Pros: It boils water quickly and keeps it hot for a long time. The "keeping hot" is not due to continuous electricity draw but rather due to its construction. As it keeps the water hot, to boil again is VERY quick.
Cons: To those complaining of a stuck "pouring lock button", the fix is simple. Remove the lid, turn it over, and remove the large silver perforated cap by rotating and pulling (it's just held on with a gasket). Once removed, you will see the bottom of the pouring lock button. MY experience, simply removing the cap, then locking/unlocking the lock button several times is sufficient to un-stick it. Then replace the silver cap with gasket; it's just a pressure fit. Do pay attention to the fill line inside the pot (it can be difficult to see). If you overfill, then unlock the pouring lock button, the kettle will spit boiling water from the spout. But if you use it correctly and don't overfill, NO problem.
Overall Review: I've had one for 3 years now, daily use, several times a day. I do have another expensive electric kettle where you can select various water temperatures, but I never use that one. All I need is one to boil water for hot chocolate, instant soup, black tea, ramen, etc. This one is fantastic for that. I like this so much, I recently bought another, just to have a spare. For me, this thing is essential.
RED CMR
Pros: CMR, not SMR. This is the "old" RED drive, now with a name that easily shows it uses CMR. At least NOW, WD CLEARLY shows which storage technology is being used.
Cons: Was burnt several times with the "old" name AFTER WD switched to SMR but never made that clear. ALWAYS check new drives are not DOA on arrival, don't wait. During this year, have bought several and 1 was DOA. Returned to Newegg for replacement, quickly done.
Overall Review: Have used a number of these, once provisioned: 1. LONG format, NOT quick 2. Full chkdsk drive_letter: /x /v /f /r /b 3. StableBit Scanner surface check 16 hours of continuous reads/writes, but now I know it's stable.
Keeps HDD's COOL
Pros: Built in fan, although small, keeps drives COOL, even during HEAVY accesses. For each new HDD, I provision: 1. LONG format, not quick 2. FULL chkdsk: chkdsk drive_letter: /x /v /f /r /b 3. StableBit (paid program) surface scan For a 4TB HDD, this will take almost 24 hours of continuous accesses. This enclosure keeps the drive cool.
Cons: None
Overall Review: I have a number of these, and have bought a few more of the larger capacity enclosures. They work, and having to work with 10 screws to install or remove a drive is not that big a burden as long as you know how to use a screwdriver. Besides using for provisioning, I have 2 for enterprise class archive HDD's to store my digital photos. With these enclosures, I've never had a fan fail, and I know the drives will be kept cool.
Replacements
Pros: UPDATE: OK, I will say ADATA does stand by their warranty. Went to their web site, jumped thru a few hoops (download and install a test program on computer, try to reset drives. No luck on either). Filled out an on-line RMA request, sent the drives to ADATA; a week later, had 2 replacements. What is a bit "strange" is NO supporting documentation required (as in invoice) for the RMA. Just had to enter a "serial" number (same for both drives so maybe some type of batch identifier) on the form. A GUESS is perhaps a bad batch of chips, prone to failure? The replacements have different numbers. So far, the replacements are working OK.
Cons: Bought 2. Didn't use right away (my mistake) but previous versions worked fine. Relied on those. When I did need these, loaded one to capacity. Worked for a week. Deleted data, loaded more. Load failed, flash drive not recognized by windows 10. Tried to format, couldn't even format. Removed 2nd drive from its package. This one was dead on arrival. Tried to write, couldn't write, windows said to reformat. Tried, windows couldn't format. This was NOT one computer or port. This was on THREE different computers, two ports each. These things are garbage.
Overall Review: TOTAL waste of money. Even if they did start working, too shaky to be reliable (said of the originals if I was able to "fix" them using the downloaded ADATA tool). The replacements are working OK, BUT I would not put any irreplaceable data on them. I use them to load videos for watching on TV or on mobile phone.
