I'm trying to connect 2 monitors with hdmi but want to extend monitors not just duplicate them. Will this item work?

Yes, you can extend your desktop to the monitors connected with this unit (Windows 7 Pro). Works reasonably well for static content (like email), but you don't want to push video through these. It will look choppy (drop frames). Your question indicates you have two HDMI monitors. This device has one HDMI and one DVI connector. I haven't had the best of luck with HDMI/DVI converters. I'll leave that issue for someone else to answer.
