Does it come with a digital clock display?

No -- it is nothing more than picture frame BUT it provides an excellent rotating graphic display and has remained reliable since purchase. Make sure the size is what you want and expect.

can this be operated by battery power rather than plug-in?

I don't remember a battery compartment on it, but I threw it away almost as soon as I got it. It was a free gift with another purchase. The picture is so bad on this thing it almost has to be seen to be believed. Just for reference, the resolution on this thing is about 1/20 of the average smart phone resolution today. So whatever you are thinking of doing with this thing -- just don't.

Is this battery powered?

Not Battery powered. It needs to be plugged into wall with included adapter.

Can this frame run on batteries?

Sorry to say, I don't know. I gave it as a gift and never looked at it. If I remember correctly, it can't run on batteries.

Can the frame be displayed in desktop in vertical (portrait) format?

Yes, the frame can be oriented portrait. Of course, your pictures will have to have been taken in portrait to display correctly.
