what cable do I use to connect this dvd/cd burner to my computer?

SATA. Preferably SATA 3 as they generally have the clips to hold them in place. SATA connections are shaped kind of like a L. It is possible, but unlikely, that you bought one with a IDE kind of connector. They have thin metal pins for connection. They will use a IDE cable which is thin, flat, and wide. SATA 2/3 is preferable as you get better transfer speeds, better air flow through the case, and is not a "legacy" device. IDE is obsolete but still a workable option for optical drives.

This product is connected to the laptop via USB cable right?  Is the USB cable included with this purchase?

This is an "internal" drive for _desktop_ computers. There is no USB interface. You connect it to the desktop motherboard via SATA cable and connect it to your desktop computer's internal power supply with one of the standard spare cables permanently attached to that power supply. Thanks Walt. I have. My DVD R/W is not detected by Windows 10. I tried to replace it with an LG Blu-ray burner and that one also is not detected by Windows 10.

Yes, this ASUS DVD-Writer (Black SATA Model DRW-24F1ST) can write to a dual layer DVD up to the specified speed of 8X. The DVD writers of today, especially ASUS, are fantastic, the only thing they can't do is load up the blank...LOL

As long as you have an available 5.25 drive bay, sata power and an open sata port on your motherboard you should be fine.

Appears the cheapest component in my first build is a paperweight. Upon unpacking, I noticed the connections on the rear say "SATA Signal & SATA Power". However, I assume the component uses the old IDE cable. Looked for an adapter, and they appear to cost more than the optical drive. I read the previous reviews, and thought I had it right. Suggestions for a beginner?

This IS A SATA DRIVE. You hook it up the same as a SATA hard drive. Use a SATA cable to plug into a SATA slot on your Motherboard and a SATA power plug from your PSU. NO adapter is needed as this IS NOT an EIDE drive.

works fine , I have found ASUS to be a trusted mfg. I have had some problems with Windows 10 but the dvd and similar products work ok.

Will the tray work for a sideways mounting?

There are small tab like features built into the edge of the upper tray area.  This will hold the disk in place while unit is on its side. So, it should work for what you need.
