G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 32GB 288-Pin PC RAM DDR4 3200 (PC4 25600) Intel XMP 2.0 Desktop Memory Model F4-3200C16S-32GVK

Pros: - Works at 3200 MHz. - Good latency. - Works well with AMD x570. - No LED and other decorative nonsense. I want memory chips, not a Christmas tree.

Cons: - None.

Overall Review: Very happy with these chips so far.

Most Critical Review
GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD3 AM3+ AMD 990FX + SB950 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard
GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD3 AM3+ AMD 990FX + SB950 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard

Pros: Great feature set (RAID controller, dual BIOS, 6 SATA3 ports, USB 3.0 and so on) Support for both AM3 and AM3+ CPUs, which gives me the option to upgrade when AMD releases a decent FX CPU.

Cons: - Windows didn't recognize my SSD as such, because I enabled RAID. I have 2 HDDs in RAID1 for data, and 1 SSD for the OS. Windows only recognizes SSDs when in AHCI mode. In RAID mode, it treats it as a SCSI device, and doesn't disable defrag (shortens SSD lifespan), Superfetch, ReadyBoost etc. The blame is split here, but there should be a way to expose the RAID array as a SCSI, and the SSD in AHCI mode. - EasySaver causes audio stutter. I enabled EasySaver early on, set up my system, and discovered 2 days later that my system couldn't play any audio correctly. It took me another day of debugging to discover that EasySaver caused the CPU to stutter in handling interrupts and DPCs. Operations that should take 50-250 µs were taking 100-200 ms. EasySaver is not worth it, it barely saves 1-2W per hour. - SATA port layout. Actually using all 6 ports is pretty inconvenient.

Overall Review: It may be harsh to give 3/5 to an otherwise great motherboard, but you only get one chance to make a first impression. I spent a great deal of time debugging audio stutter issues, and was shocked to discover Windows wasn't treating my SSD as one. Features such as EasySaver shouldn't be advertised unless they actually work flawlessly. EasySaver is also easy to rip into, because it barely saves any power anyway. The CPU adjusts its frequency dynamically regardless, and that's where the bulk of the savings come from.

Works as expected

EVGA SuperNOVA 850 G5, 80 Plus Gold 850W, Fully Modular, Eco Mode with FDB Fan, 10 Year Warranty, Includes Power ON Self Tester, Compact 150mm Size, Power Supply 220-G5-0850-X1

Pros: I installed it into the case, connected it to the motherboard and the system worked without any issues. I have a moderately hungry system and I oversized the PSU by a little. It's working fine. It's relatively quiet, doesn't seem to get hot.

Cons: None so far.

Overall Review: Good product, no surprises so far.

Works as expected

GIGABYTE Geforce RTX 2060 OC 6G Graphics Card, 2 x WINDFORCE Fans, 6GB 192-Bit GDDR6, GV-N2060OC-6GD Video Card
GIGABYTE Geforce RTX 2060 OC 6G Graphics Card, 2 x WINDFORCE Fans, 6GB 192-Bit GDDR6, GV-N2060OC-6GD Video Card

Pros: The graphics card performs well in several games I tried. I also use it with 2 1080p monitors and 1 4K display and I haven't had any issues. I use it both with Windows 10 and with Ubuntu 19.10 and it's been smooth sailing all around.

Cons: I didn't run into any issues in the first 2 months.

Overall Review: I like this card, I think it's good value for the money and I'd buy it again.

Excellent motherboard; avoid the gizmo drivers

GIGABYTE X570 AORUS ELITE AMD Ryzen 3000 PCIe 4.0 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.2 AMD X570 ATX Motherboard
GIGABYTE X570 AORUS ELITE AMD Ryzen 3000 PCIe 4.0 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.2 AMD X570 ATX Motherboard

Pros: - Easy to install. Everything matched the manual, nothing unexpected happened during installation. - Excellent value for the money. Very good chipset with all the right features, not far above the average motherboard price range.

Cons: - The Windows drivers for the optional gizmos (e.g. LED lights) are horrendously unstable. Not the chipset drivers, those work fine, the Gigabyte extras. All the Gigabyte utilities for Windows (BIOS configuration, BIOS update, LED etc) are unusable on my system, because loading the Gigabyte driver leads to a blue screen in less than 2-3 minutes after boot. The system will work fine with the most recent BIOS (installed via QFlash) and the most recent chipset drivers, but there was no way for me to install the Gigabyte utilities without rendering the system unusable.

Overall Review: Except for the Gigabyte utilities, the motherboard is an excellent product.

Works so far

WD Red Plus 4TB NAS Hard Disk Drive - 5400 RPM Class SATA 6Gb/s, CMR, 64MB Cache, 3.5 Inch - WD40EFRX
WD Red Plus 4TB NAS Hard Disk Drive - 5400 RPM Class SATA 6Gb/s, CMR, 64MB Cache, 3.5 Inch - WD40EFRX

Pros: I bought 4 of these to use in a Synology NAS (btrfs). All 4 drives worked. I'm able to max out a 1 Gbps link with them. Unless they fail in the first 3 months, I hope they last 5+ years.

Cons: Too early to tell. We'll see what the failure rate is.

Overall Review: I'd have preferred a slightly larger drive at 7,200 RPM, but that's hard to find at this price. This drive is very good value for the money. Keep in mind, if buying for NAS, you'll probably want multiple drives (at least 3 and ideally more, depending on your budget).
