I'm looking for a drive to stream my music from.  Does this drive act like an external hard drive, or is it an archive only for storage and backup?

So far, almost 18 months, no issues. I used this primarily as back up drive. It's fast enough and I got a USB 3.0 Super Speed pci card and my computer says it will be faster if I plugged it in there. Didn't know that.  I only got that card for a black magic designs shuttle for digitizing my old video tapes. This is definitely the thing to get for this price. I get almost all my computer components from New egg. I think I have the warranty too. I may buy another just to back video files up.

Does this box have a 4TB drive inside or a couple of 2TBs?

Is it backwards compatible to USB 2.0?

Yes... The cable will work in a usb 2.0 port.  Of course the transfer speed will be limited to 2.0 speeds.

Yes it will work on USB-2 without any problems, but of course, slower than USB-3.

Can this external hard drive be hooked up to my home network for automatic backups of my Mac, photos, etc.?

Yes you can hang it off any AirPort device that has a USB input, like the Airport Express devices, and it can be used as a Time Machine backup drive.

Yes. I use this hard drive exactly for that reason myself. I backed up a large collection of my blu-rays on this hard drive and so far it has worked perfectly. Very easy to setup. And its very quiet u will hardly know its there.

Full sized.  This is a large external back up.  I have had it for about 1 year and it has worked well.  Great value.

Can these units be set vertically?  They appear to be designed to only lay flat.

I would not recommend it.  The case offers no options, feet/supports to encourage that angle.  The case is low profile and doesn't seem balanced on an edge
