Under compatibility, it does not mention Windows 8. Is this mouse in fact not compatible with Windows 8/8.1?

What is the button behind the scroll button for?

When you click it the scroll wheel becomes free and has nothing to stop it, and it spins freely, when you press it back up its like a normal scroll wheel, and there is clicking when you turn it

I have had issues with wireless and I would like to use this like a wired mouse.  Does it work if you plug the USB cable into the computer and don't plug in the wireless receiver?

No.  The USB cord is for charging only.  You can use the mouse while the USB cord is plugged in but it still operates for wireless connectivity only.

What is the range you can get from this?  wanting to  use in a conference room and make mouse keyboard wireless,  need to get about 20 to 30 feet range.

Good question, not one I thought about when buying this. So I grabbed the pad and walked out of the office. Made it about 40 feet or so before the moving pointer began become unreliable. Not quite line-of-sight, there's a network closet and two interior walls between.

As a bonus, I'll mention that the mouse doesn't work reliably with my glass desk. Hence the pad I mentioned.

I have the Logitech m510 great mouse but need one that is thinner to go into my laptop bag.  Doe's anyone know how high the mouse is?

The Performance Mouse is not thin.  It fits my large hand just fine.   I use the Logitech Anywhere MX on my laptop.  It is much thinner.

How long does the battery charge last before you have to plug it in to recharge?  How long to recharge using USB?  using AC?  Thanx.

I never bother to turn the mouse off. Too many years of not needing to, I guess. The battery lasts about two weeks. When it throws up a low battery alert I plug it into a high-current USB port and it's charged in a couple of hours, tops. I don't think I've used the AC adapter even once.

Even though you didn't ask, I'll add that it doesn't track well at all on my 1/2-inch thick glass desktop. The claim that it worked well on glass was one of my reasons for choosing this mouse. It's not a showstopper, it's still a good unit.

Is the top center button programmable as it was on the MX Revolution?

The top center button is (directly underneath the scroll wheel) is NOT programmable. It controls the scroll wheel's "clicking" or free spin function.  The rest are. On the MX Revolution it was by default the application switcher button I believe, which has been moved to where the Thumb Rest is, which is in fact programmable through Logitech's SetPoint software. I am very pleased with this mouse. I've had it for almost a year and I think I like it better than the MX revolution which I had and loved. I think is has better features and I prefer the new charging method which doesn't require you putting the mouse on a cradle. You can plug in the USB cable and still use the mouse. It's a big deal when you're working on something and the batteries need charging. You don't need to stop working. Also the unifying receiver is a big win too. ......Hope this was helpful.

my Microsoft wireless keyboard works all except typing in anything. the line is flashing as ready to type but nothing happens when you type in. What is wrong?

It is likely a driver install error. Usually a restart can fix this. Try restarting the computer with the keyboard plugged in.

No. The wireless receiver is required. USB is for charging only.

Not that I'm aware of. There is a Bluetooth version that is an older model.  I prefer the Unifying model (this version)  as it is very responsive and doesn't have the flaky connection issues associated with Bluetooth devices.
