What does this actually do?

its standard USB a flash drive, but it also has a micro USB connection on the other end that also allows connection to smart phones or tablets ( generally android )its called a USB OTG ( on the go) it is formatted so the phones /tablet operating systems will recognize it. so you can transfer files to and from without having to connect the phone etc directly to a computer.

Will this store my iPhone 5 photos, vidoes, data?

it has a Micro-USB connector and a normal USB connector. The Micro-USB will plug into Android phones, but I-Phones have a different connector.
