Will this converter allow you to connect an HD cable box with an HDMI connection to a monitor with a VGA connection?

I have used this laptop with a projector.  The projector has HDMI and VGA ports and laptop has a HDMI port only.   The cable to the projector was VGA which went under the floor of the church, so, I did not want to replace that.   What I did is purchase a HDMI to VGA adapter.   This worked fine except the sound wanted to come out of the projector speakers.   With a little research on the laptop sound, the MAXX audio lets you choose the sound out port you want to use.  So for the sound to come out of the church sound system, I chose the Dell Sound Out option and attached it to the one sound port on the laptop and everything works great.   At some time in the future, I will replace the VGA cable under the floor of the church with a HDMI cable, but this adapter allowed me time to do that at my leisure.   David

Does it work for mac OS X 10.10?

I'm using it on a Mac Mini running OS X 10.9. The version of OS shouldn't make a difference, but here is the important point: HDMI is a digital format and VGA is an analog format. To do this conversion, the adaptor needs DC power. The Mac Mini doesn't supply power on its HDMI output, so you will need to plug a USB cable (standard type A male to micro USB type B) between the Mac and the adaptor. The Newegg web page says the cable is included, but it isn't. The Tripp Lite UR050-06N is a good choice.

I think this information will apply to other Mac models besides the Mini.
