Virtual reality headsets provide fantasy immersion environments that allow you to do everything from boxing in a gritty virtual boxing gym to racing along a speedway in a Lamborghini. Whether you are new to VR gaming headsets or are just discovering them for the first time, you've probably noticed that the VR game landscape is full of options. Know exactly what type of gaming headset you need to purchase for the experience that you are hoping to have.

Use Standalone VR Headsets For Streamlined Hardware

Most VR systems require connections to external hardware, but standalone systems are self-contained units. You take them out of the box, plug them in, and they are ready to go. They also are much more affordable than other VR options, making them ideal for people who want to try out the VR experience without spending a lot of cash. Manufacturers build the system display hardware, graphics processing hardware and other VR accessories directly into standalone headsets. The graphics processing hardware used is the same type of equipment utilized in smartphones. There are several different options available, so finding a good choice is easy for people who prefer their devices to be completely separate from each other.

Smartphone-Based VR Systems Are Entry-Level Options

Mobile virtual reality headsets are a vehicle for people who want to explore the VR world for the first time. Options are available for both IOS and Android phones, making them perfect for just about anyone who'd like to make their first forays into VR. The smartphone slots directly into the headset, and its display doubles as the headset's display. The headset has lenses that make the visuals stereoscopic.

Employ Tethered Systems for Extremely High-Tech Experiences

The user must connect tethered systems directly to a console or a gaming PC via a cable. The cables are usually anywhere between 14 and 15 feet in length.  Look for a VR headset for PC or console to use these systems. Some headsets have external sensors that allow the system to track the wearer's position. The system also comes with headphones, head-mounted display and lenses. The gaming PC or console houses the rest of the hardware needed, including the graphics processing hardware and computing hardware.

Refresh Rates Help Determine Your Viewing Experience

When choosing your VR system, pay attention to its refresh rate. Systems tethered to consoles and PCs have tons of computing power and also have the ability to render seamless graphics in VR games. The higher the refresh rate, the more flawless the graphics will be in the virtual space. Lower refresh rates often result in more jumpy graphics that disrupt the immersion experience. Tethered VR gaming headsets tethered to consoles and desktop computers have the highest refresh rates at around  90 Hz to 120 Hz. Standalone and smartphone systems usually have refresh rates of between 60 and 70 Hz.
