Is this the toner I need for my samsung printer model #scx 3405 w?  How can I tel on this printer when i need a refill.  How long does this toner last.

Not certain if it's the appropriate toner cartridge (should be able to tell by pinging the Samsung website), but for my Samsung printer, the telltale sign the toner needs replacing is a noticeable lightening (and variability) of the print density which is not resolved by pulling out the toner/drum unit and tipping it back and forth several times (which redistributes the remaining toner and should get you another 50 - 70 pages before finally needing to replace it.)

Toner should be fine as long as it's kept in a "climate-controlled" room. If you plan to keep it on the shelf for an extended period, you may want to shake the cartridge from time to time to keep the toner powder from clumping. I've used toner that sat on the shelf over a year and I am unable to notice any difference.
