Most Favorable Review

Nice price & specs

ASUS 15.6" Intel Core i5-3210M 6GB Memory Windows 8 K55A-WH51
ASUS 15.6" Intel Core i5-3210M 6GB Memory Windows 8 K55A-WH51

Pros: Got this laptop to run Visual Studio 2012. For the price, the specs are nice. I've never had an Asus laptop before, and like the keyboard.

Cons: You have to get used to Windows 8.

Overall Review: Asus seems to have reached a good price/performance tradeoff with this little laptop. It has a decent 15.6" screen, a nice keyboard, an i5 processor, and 6GB of RAM. I got this laptop after looking in a store which had a Toshiba and HP display model, either of which I would have gotten if they had been in stock. I'm kind of glad I ordered the Asus laptop now.

Most Critical Review

cheap plastic

Rosewill 2.5" SATA III Stylish and Screwless HDD / SSD Enclosure RX203
Rosewill 2.5" SATA III Stylish and Screwless HDD / SSD Enclosure RX203

Pros: Does the job and works, no problems.

Cons: You know Rosewill will be a cheap product, and this is no exception. I found the plastic too flimsy to trust for my backup SSD. Fine for less-important disks.

Overall Review: Unlike other external cases, there's a little button on the side you have to push to get the drive to come on. I've never had a case like that before. Usually I just plug them in. I thought I had a bad drive when the computer did not recognize it. After I found the button, I realized the case was fine and it worked with no problems.

2019 rescue

AsRock Rack H87WS-DL ATX Server Motherboard LGA 1150 Intel H87 DDR3 1600 / 1333
AsRock Rack H87WS-DL ATX Server Motherboard LGA 1150 Intel H87 DDR3 1600 / 1333

Pros: Bring your Haswell build back to life with this motherboard. LGA 1150 forever.

Cons: Not really any cons. It's a full ATX, so be sure you have a big case for it.

Overall Review: In Feb 2019, I had a Haswell-era machine start locking up. I did a lot of troubleshooting, and the motherboard was the only thing left that could be the problem. I thought about doing a new build to replace the machine, but looking at the cost of starting over with a modern-day motherboard, new DDR4 memory, a new processor was a little too high. For $120 and an hour or so of work transplanting the motherboard, I had the same machine running again. I was surprised to find a new LGA 1150 motherboard still available. Given this box's workload, the old Haswell-era Core i7 was fine, and the DDR3 memory was fine. All I needed was a new motherboard, and this one worked great.

threadripper build

ASRock X399 Taichi sTR4 AMD X399 ATX AMD Motherboard
ASRock X399 Taichi sTR4 AMD X399 ATX AMD Motherboard

Pros: A lot to like about this board. I am pleased with my Threadripper build, and once everything was workng, it's great. I like the two Ethernet interfaces, since I often add a second ethernet card for routing other LAN segments to my computers. Pleased with the eight memory slots - I have room to expand beyond 64GB. For the month or so I've been using my Threadripper system built with this board, it's been solid. (Currently about 25 days uptime.) I had not done an AMD build this century, but the new Threadripper build has exceeded my expectations.

Cons: Memory is very close to the processor. Not all coolers will fit, especially if they have a heat sink. Documentation is horrible. Why use a 6 point, super-thin font? Also, why can't the diagram of the motherboard and list of what everything is be on facing pages? Putting the diagram on one page and list on the next is not convenient.

Overall Review: Tempermental - I did a lot of research and finally discovered the video card has to be in the third PCI-E slot for the computer's BIOS to display. Took me a long time to discover that, and I almost returned the board as defective. (The board's manual may mention this somewhere, but it's almost unreadable.) The LED codes are sort of good news/bad news, since they're helpful, except I've never found anything anywhere that tells what they mean. Typing the code sequence into Google and hoping you can find something is about all you can do.

Samsung 32GB EVO microSDHC UHS-I/U1 Memory Card with Adapter, Speed Up to 95MB/s (MB-MP32GA/AM)

Pros: Works great.

Cons: None that I have found yet.

Overall Review: I did not know Samsung even made SD cards. I got this because it looks different from all my other SD cards, making it easy to tell it apart. But I liked it so much I got 2 more in different capacities.

a mouse for a mac

Macally 3 Button Optical USB-C Wired Mouse for Mac and PC - Optical - Cable - White - USB Type C - 1000 dpi - Notebook, Computer - Scroll Wheel - 3 Button(s) - Ambidextrous
Macally 3 Button Optical USB-C Wired Mouse for Mac and PC - Optical - Cable - White - USB Type C - 1000 dpi - Notebook, Computer - Scroll Wheel - 3 Button(s) - Ambidextrous

Pros: Small USB-C mouse for my Mac that works.

Cons: A little small, but it's portable, so I can live with it.

Overall Review: I hated the USB-C keyboard I got from Macally, but really like their little USB-C mouse which I put in my laptop bag. A little small for my hand, but it's supposed to be small to be portable. Later on, I'm sure more USB-C mice will be available, or just get a USB-A mouse and a dongle, but this mouse is nice.
