will this work with a active pfc psu?

Accepted Answer

No. Cyberpower has models that work with an active pfc PSU.  Model # CP1000PFCLCD will work with a PSU with pfc.  Most newer 80+ Bronze certified PSUs or greater will be and active pfc type, so check the PSU manual and specs to make sure.

Question 2

How loud is the fan while the unit is idle? Is it different while it's on battery (during an outage) vs powered? I plan to use this in my living room and hope it's silent.

Quiet as a mouse on battery, quiet as a mouse when just passing the power through.  Yes the fan comes on when it is recharging the battery but I never notice it.  And it doesn't recharge that often.  I have one on a computer and TV in two bedrooms.

Question 3

I need a device that will protect my PC from irregulat voltage supply. high and low, an ARV capibility.  I don't necessarily need backup power supply so will the CyberPower CP1000AVRLCD 1000VA 600 Watt UPS  provide that feature for me?

Yep, that's what I use this for myself. Power surges fried my old PC's PSU and Mobo. Got a new pc and this device and have had no problems since. It even monitors and logs abnormal power events so you can see what it protected your PC from. Note that it isn't a pure sine wave inverter, so there is some square-wave high frequency harmonic noise on the output. It isn't enough to damage anything but some power supplies don't like it and you get glitchy operation when it is running on backup power. All consumer grade inverters do this. You can get a simple power line noise filter to fix this issue though (place it between UPS and PC).

Seems to me that there are 9 outlets, only 4 of which are protected, and I can't figure which is which.  Help please. Which is which?

I need AVR to protect against low voltage events but backup power isn't a major concern.  I am using the BR700g but am wondering if this unit will do the job as well?  If so this would be preferable because of the smaller size, and of course price?  Thank you, Steve

This unit works quite well for low voltage events. I have not had any problems with it and I live in an area with fluctuating power due to storms and aging infrastructure. As to power backup it last longer than what I would have first thought with this one.

Display/Select Button 
The button can be used to select the LCD display contents including Input Voltage, Output Voltage, and Estimated Run Time. Short press the 
button to scroll down the function menu. Pressing the button for 3 seconds will keep the LCD display always on or turn the LCD display off while 
in AC/Utility power mode. For more information, please refer to the Function Setup Guide.

OK - I want to back up my Ooma and cable modem in case of power failure (would of loved for my cell phone to do this - but the signal dropped to zero when the power failed recently - why the cell tower did not have backup is a mystery right now).

I would expect to turn this guy off - until I wanted to make an emergency call. This unit seems like over kill - suggestons?

These things are meant to stay on, and are great for brownouts and short blackouts. I have a few of them, for complete desktops & media center. If you expect a prolonged blackout, your scenario would definitely work (turning it on for emergency calls). Better over prepared than under prepared... besides if it's more than you need, I'm sure you can find something else to plug in. ;)

Can I set the triger voltage at 120v, so that the UPS will turn on at that voltage?

The topology of this UPS is one of "Line interactive". And because this model has an AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulation) this model will interact in the event that you have a low voltage (between 90 VAC and 120 VAC) or high voltage condition (up to 140 VAC). Above that the surge suppressor will eventually begin to work, but there will be a delay and while that delay is ongoing, high currents may be passed through to the surge suppressor and the UPS.

Being Line interactive, once the voltage falls below some preset threshold (i.e., below 90 VAC) the UPS batteries will kick in and the UPS will output a simulated sine-wave (a stepped square wave). Some equipment may not operate nicely with a simulated sine-wave although it may appear to for a while, long term you're hastening it's demise (i.e., its being damaged over time and will eventually fail). CyberPower makes a UPS with true sine-wave outputs that are a little more costlier but will work in all applications that require active PFC or not.
