Can this scanner scan both sides of a page in one go or will I have to reload it to scan each side?

The Scannate i940 can scan both sides of the paper in a single pass. There are 9 different configurations so you can set configurations for those you most frequently use. I have #1 set to scan double sided color at 300 dpi and #2 at single sided black and white at 200dpi.  When plugged in with the power adapter it scans crazy fast. It also powers up really fast. In a matter of seconds you are ready to scan.  I love this scanner!!!

Yes, of course you can scan directly to your computer via USB port. This is the main feature of the scanner. You can configure 9 different places you can scan to directly into PDF, TIFF, etc. Ive been a Kodak Scanmate user for many years and my whole life is organized because of this little gadget... every single piece of paper is electronic in my home office now...

Can this scanner send its scans to MS Word or EXCEL?  Michael

The software that comes with the scanner outputs into PDF or image files and also into RTF.  RTF files can be opened in Word, however, you may find that the automatic OCR is not real good.   There are other programs will work with the scanner (such as ABBYY) that will input the scan directly into Word, and have a better OCR program that has very few errors.

Can this device feed and scan in ATM receipts from banks and Credit Card receipts from stores?

Absolutely! The only thing I have discovered it can't read are items that are too small to be grabbed properly by the rollers (like only 1x2 inches). It does great with all different sizes of paper and reads them well. My only suggestion is don't wait too long to scan them if it is a thermal receipt that will fade.

Is this scanner plug and play? I am on a network where I cannot install additional software.

yes it will work with the native windows "fax and scan" and the mac native scan (built in) software, HOWEVER  using it this way you are losing so many of the cool features of the kodak software, for example i believe it will not scan pdf as searchable, et cetera. but it will scan.

How capable is the software that comes with this? Is it good enough to convert a home office to paperless? Does it do OCR?

The scanner makes short work of making copies of documents.  It can do two sides at once and handles even small pieces of paper.  It can create searchable pdfs.  It looks like it keeps the original image but saves the OCRed text also for searches within the docment.  It does this quite fast and seems to do a good job.  The software is somewhat limited if you want to create a copy that look perfectly clean and like the original.  It has other drivers to use the scanner with other software.  The OCR function works with the pdf creation, but I don't remember if it will do ocr and create a text doc like word.  When making copies any creases in the paper will appear as lines in the scanned document.  This can be lightened some but not as well as dedicated software, but that takes much longer and supplied software output if perfectly fine for my purpose.  I love it.  It is portable and not a heavy duty scanner so you should consider how much you will use it.  I got it on sale and it has worked great for me.

We do not use the scanner on any Linux systems. But I belive it is compatable. I found a link on the Kodak site that will give you more information. I would paste the link but the system will not allow.  I found it by doing a google dearch for kodak scanmate I940 support

I have 22 years of family photos that I wish to digitize.  I need a scanner that I can feed the photos and do the job quickly, filing them in my mac laptop.  Would this scanner do the job?  How fast does it take to scan a 5x7 photo?

This scanner can definitely do the job that you want. It would scan the photo is five seconds or less. Please note that the scanner does upload the pictures just slightly darker and may upload them slightly crooked.
