Love this tablet! Took time to reach optimal setup.
Pros: Super powerful, fun, expandable, and addicting!
Cons: Takes a little patience to get it running smoothly
Overall Review: If you're reading this you're probably impressed with the Shield's specs, but after reading some reviews, you're worried you might end up with a lemon. I have had my tablet for almost a month, and while there were some hiccups breaking it in, it is now running great. It's just about everything I wanted in a tablet. I have no wifi issues, no bluetooth issues, no battery issues, no light bleed issues, no case cracking issues. There is a very minor lag issues when the device is first booting up and you start the browser, but after its been running a bit the speed picks up and it runs VERY quickly. Here are some pointers for someone buying the Shield Tablet: 1. IMPORTANT: Immediately upgrade to Lollipop and then do a factory reset. During the first boot after the factory reset, be sure to select "Set up as new device"! Do NOT use the Google backup/recovery program! After I did this nearly all the problems disappeared and have not returned. In particular the battery performance improved significantly. 2. You must use 5.0Ghz wifi to get the most out of your Shield Tablet. 2.4Ghz will not run Nvidia GRID, and will also interfere with bluetooth. This problem is not particular to the Shield, and will affect most devices with bluetooth. 5Ghz wifi does not penetrate walls as well as 2.4Ghz, so you'll get fewer bars when you're in a different room from the router as compared to 2.4. (Wifi cafe workaround: Connect your phone to the cafe's wifi, pair tablet with your phone via bluetooth and turn off wifi on the tablet.) 3. Some apps/games do not run on Lollipop. Research this first! 4. There was obviously a bad production lot that got shipped. In addition it took Nvidia a little time to tune the OS. But I think enough time has passed and the tablet is now solid, reliable, and powerful. If you got a bad one make sure you exchange it for a new one (not refurbished). Now that I've got the kinks ironed out, this thing ROCKS! -Numerous games not available on other Android devices -Good battery life -Great bluetooth pairing with keyboards, mice, and my Nexus 5 (which I tether) -128GB sd card slot! I put a 32GB in mine. -You can install many apps/games ONTO THE SD CARD! -Console mode turns it into a console, complete with multi-controller support. -Good graphics and sound -Nearly stock Android with a few apps tastefully installed by Nvidia -Sweet mappable controller that works with the user interface (sold separately) -Included stylus with apps to boot -Ultra HDMI out I would give this thing six eggs if it worked right out of the box, but it did take a little effort to get it set up. Now I love it and would buy it again in a heartbeat.
Finicky...seems to have "evil spirits"
Pros: 5G, very configurable, N-band
Cons: This thing has had trouble from day one. Slow connections, dropped packets, long ping time... then all of the sudden it will work well. Today it decided to do a hard-reset by itself. Now I'm scrambling trying to get the thing setup again. I am using it as a wireless access point, not a router, which may explain some of it, but why doesn't that function work well? I am really fed-up with it. My dumb AT&T stock router works better. I am somewhat tech-savy and have tried to troubleshoot this thing: Flash the firmware, check the wires, try different channels, hard-reset, different IP address.....grrrr!!!!!!
Overall Review: I really want to like this router. I read all the good reviews. I wanted something that was more powerful than the stock router provided by the ISP and had 5G. I may try flashing the firmware with DD-WRT. What do I have to lose? At this point, nothing.
Where have you been all my life?
Pros: This monitor is wonderful. I bought it for flight simulation games and now I can't imagine using my computer without it. It just feels good to look at.
Cons: Sound is so-so, but who buys this thing for the sound? Some programs or text may not scale perfectly if it isn't designed for high-res monitors, but that's really a software issue.
Overall Review: I had a bad experience with an Acer computer and was skeptical if I should buy another product from them. After reading reviews I decided to get this one sight-unseen. It was totally worth it! This monitor has absolutely exceeded my expectations. I am not a monitor expert so I can't give you nerdy specifics. All I can say is it looks beautiful and is AMAZING for simulation games. Update 5/6/2017: I found a dead pixel near the edge of my monitor. I'm not sure if it was always there and I never noticed it or if it appeared as part of a burn-in process. I will not be returning this monitor. I still think it looks great. I've heard so many stories of people returning 3 or 4 monitors of any brand to get one that is perfect. In terms of value, I still recommend this monitor. Just realize that you may get a dead pixel. (I always wonder if the manufacturer is aware of these defects when they ship, and then just "wait and see" if the customer finds out). I am subtracting an egg.
My first Zotac product. It works great.
Pros: Powerful and small. Quiet. Good cooling.
Cons: None so far.
Overall Review: I had never heard of Zotac but had read on many sites that this was a great card for cheaper gaming build. Benchmarks for Flight Simulator X (my "game" if you can call it that) were hardly better on the 1080. I went with this and have been very satisfied. Everything works great. I still haven't maxed it out to the point where frame rates start really dropping.
Great board, just not for Windows 7. USB issue solved.
Pros: Feature packed, great price, high performance.
Cons: The UEFI BIOS make it difficult to install Windows 7
Overall Review: This is a great board. Once I decided to install Windows 10 I had no problems. However if you are hoping to install Windows 7, be prepared for some issues. I don't doubt that it CAN be done, but it seems to require clearing one hurdle after another. Apparently this is true for all modern UEFI BIOS motherboards. Here are my findings: 1. USB settings. You will need to enable the USB simulator in the UEFI BIOS if you want to use a USB keyboard. But how do you get to BIOS without a keyboard?! Hint: Unplug your hard drive. 2. To install Windows 7, you'll have to add USB drivers to the Windows installation image. ASRock has a tool for this. 3. The hard drive MUST be formatted with a GPT partition. I am not sure if new hard drives are formatted this way. I salvaged my hard drive and needed to delete all partitions, create one GPT partition, then format with NTFS. You'll need to use FDISK to do this. 4. At some point I got sick of these hurdles and decided to finally switch to Windows 10. I am always skeptical of the latest release of an operating system. Now that it is installed I can say it isn't as bad as I had thought. I still miss Windows 7, but I'll eventually learn how to tweak 10 to my likings. I have not had compatibility issues and it is stable.
Most ergonomic keyboard I've used.
Pros: This thing feels great. An absolute 5-star keyboard. It almost makes me want to type. I wanted a keyboard that had key pressure similar to my laptop. I finally found it--at an affordable price. I threw away my Kinesis Freestyle2--Supposedly a fancy ergo keyboard. This thing blew it out of the water for 1/3 the cost. It has good weight and standard layout too. No drivers required for the Fn keys to work. Update 3/20/2017: Still the best keyboard I have ever owned.
Cons: Keys may show ware after some use. It doesn't do my laundry for me.
