Great Deal
Pros: -Beautiful screen -Full num-pad -Internal wireless N -Great specs (memory, processor, video card)! -Dedicated backlit volume buttons (for some reason they are not shown in the pictures...but they are there) -ASUS face-recognition software is both cool and functional. Logs me in automatically -Runs Crysis and any other game Ive tried like a champ. Fallout 3 looks beartiful. LOTRO and BF2 run at max settings without a hicth.
Cons: -Only 3 USB ports -Blue-tooth software pops up when caps-lock/num-lock are pressed. It would kick me out of Crysis, which was really annoying -Glossy parts are really pretty, but can be frustrating if your OCD about your stuff
Overall Review: Some of the bloatware is useful/tolerable, some is really frustrating. The Blue-tooth software program issue is so stupid. If you have problems with the caps-lock notifications kicking you out of full screen games, just stop the "BTTray.exe" process. Lord knows why they included that with the Blue-tooth software...so annoying! The included security software is also somewhat annoying. Whats worse I couldnt get some of it to uninstall. Looks like Im going to have to reimage the harddrive. Ill probably do that on my days off just to combine my hard drive from 2 partitions into one. Crysis ran on all medium settings at 1024x768 at good frame rates, no hichups during big battles. Windows Preformance rated this machine a 4.8 with the following breakdown: Processor - 4.9 Memory - 4.8 Windows graphics - 4.9 Game Graphics - 5.3 Hard Drive - 5.5
short range
Pros: Overall its a nice product. Good layout and good functionality. I especially like that 5 is the windows key when numlock is off. double functionality as a calculator is nice too. Feels very sturdy.
Cons: Mouse it 90% worthless. Unless you suffer from little hand syndrome, it will be incredibly awkward to use. Also, both devices have very short range (about 4 feet). Good for desktop use, but useless as a HTPC remote replacement. Also, the dongle is HUGE. Theres no excuse for that these days if you ask me.
Overall Review: So maybe the range issue is partially my fault. I have a wireless router and a wireless mouse/keyboard combo and a Turtle Beach headset all operating right next to the PC this thing was plugged in to, but none of those other devices are having any interference issues. Its really not a bad device. I took it to work and use it there. Minus 1 egg for range, minus another for the huge dongle.
Good Mobo, if you know what your doing
Pros: UEIF is fairly well laid out. Auto restore of default settings on boot failure is nice...reduces the number of times youll have to open your case to find the clear CMOS button. So far Ive had very stable overclocks. Processor is stable at 4.8Ghz and GPU is stable at 1168mhz on an A10-6800k.
Cons: AHCI mode and base clocking dont play well together. Anything over about 105mhz will cause failures unless you switch to IDE mode...which kills SSD performance (and by kills, i mean a 20-30% loss. Still much faster than spinners).
Overall Review: Getting a northbridge cooler and hoping I can push some more power though this thing.
Good keyboard
Pros: Rubber keys are nice while gaming. Makes WASD very easy to find. Key action is good for a non-mechanical keyboard. Shortcut keys are generally pretty helpful
Cons: Programmable keys arent that programmable. I guess Logitech spoiled me.
Overall Review: Blue light on the front of the keyboard is kinda tacky imho. would turn off if I could
Good HTPC case
Pros: Drive tray comes out completely to make mounting much easier. Dont cut up your fingers trying to finagle a drive in like I did...just take out the whole thing and it will be super fast! Front flip door worried me at first, but it is actually of good quality. Nice to hide some of the plugs not normally used.
Cons: No real cable management options other than stuffing everything under the drive framework.
Its a drive tray
Pros: Has placement for both bottom mount and side mount drives. In-spec, so works with any case that is also in-spec. Pretty cheap too.
Cons: Its a drive tray...what do you want? Waffles?
