My wife and children live in a house on the same block as my father and he wants to share his internet with them.  The house is about 250 away and we need something that can pick up the signal from his router, is this the right product for this fix?

Tough question.  My estimate would be that if you can at least detect your fathers wireless signal at all from your house, say with your cell phone, then you have a good chance that this antenna will get the job done.   It effectively takes a faint signal and makes the connection much stronger and clear.  If this antenna connects but still doesn't provide continuous or fast communication you may have to invest also then into a higher powered station at your fathers home.

I want to capture the free wiFi at a cafe a block away from me.

This should be the ticket for you.  Mine picks up everything within at least 3 blocks.  Will work fine with any PC or laptop.

dos it work  on  windows 7 64bit ?

I believe the software will run on the 64-bit Windows 7. I use both 64 and 32 bit programs with this hardware and find the software easy to change to other configurations.

How large is this device?
Is it compatible with a Mac?

With the antennae in the full vertical position the height is approximately 12 inches from base to tips. Each antenna can be rotated and lowered, which reduces the total height when in operation.
The device is lightweight, but stable regardless of antennae positions.
The signal strength is excellent when the device is installed and operational, both of which are easily accomplished.
I do not know if the Mac is compatible with with this device.

So I want to increase the range of my surface pro. Is this better or worse then the Marvell AVASTAR 350N Wireless Network Controller built into the surface?
Or should I look at something else for wifi adapter range extending?

You could in theory use a sub splitter but I would avoid that and this device entirely. Get a signal repeater.
