Question 1

Is there any way of connecting this to an unpowered subwoofer? I already have a Samsung subwoofer and really didn't want to buy one. Thank you.

It's possible, but is somewhat dependent on what inputs your sub has.  If it has left and right inputs and outputs, you can run the left front and right front speaker outputs from the receiver to the sub, and then from the sub to the speakers.  Won't give you separate sub volume control though.

Question 2

can I use separate video and audio outputs at the same time? i.e: watch the football game on 1 of the hdmi ins while listening to my ipod. So the video would be the football game but the audio would be my ipod.

When you use video on HDMI (1,2, or 3) the video is passed to TV and audio is automatically coming out from your AVR 5.1.
If you set audio to aux 1 or aux 2 for iPod the audio is coming out from your AVR 5.1. You can not do both at the same time. Unless your TV is not connected to the AVR.

Question 3

Does this system support only 2 Speakers stereo mode? If I dont have the 5.1 sorround system?

ALso, 3D support means that it will allow 3Dmovies and tv channels to work? For instance If I connect a 3D bluray player through the receiver to a 3D tv it would work?

Yes, many speaker modes are available by using the "OSD" on screen menu. 2.0 is one of them.

Correct, supposing your hdmi cable is new enough to support 3D. The 3D will work seemlessly, meaning there isn't a special mode needed to put the receiver into or anything.

You can also go to Harman Kardon's website and download the user manual to check out the specifics (it doesn't come in the box anyways).

Does this receiver have true pass through capability?  I have read reviews that it does not. Thanks

I have not used this capability, so can't accurately answer.
Sorry. However, been very satisfied with this product. I paired it with a set of Bose (Front & middle) and Klipsch (Rear) and a powered subwoofer. It sounds great especially at this price.

Question 5

I would like to buy a "package" speaker system for this receiver. What specifications should I look for as far as watts, ohms, whatever? Do you have a recommended speaker package for this receiver?

Hi Paula, 
This is a fine, middle-cost quality Receiver, and I'm really happy with the sound through POLK PSW Speaker system I got here at newegg too. The Monitor 65T fronts, and the PSW10 woofer and the small backs (and I had a Klipsch bigger middle to use with it) ... So for a modest sized living room, (12 feet to the Samsung 46") with a shoebox room, the woofer on the left... the couch across from the fireplace and the Samsung. It's great. The controls on this unit are a little daunting, but it's got everything any normal person (not the high-end audiophile) would want in a 5.1. 
Don't really worry about the watts, ohms... any good brand modern home theatre speaker system (that is, all totalled, over $500 list) will be fine.
I like the Harmon Kardon since I can run the gamut, VHS, Cassette player, turntable (though I don't use it much, since I have a better old system for that) and DVD and BLU-RAY (separate units) ...

im looking for my daughter she has i phne ,pad and laptop, can  this receiver be used as a docking port,and can it use a turntable?

This receiver can use i-devices for input, but you will need a cable connection as it does not have airplay technology.  There is a convenient R\L connection on the front panel so you need a mini-plug to R/L cable.  In terms of turntable, there is no specific turntable line input, but that is true of most modern receivers.  You should be able to use tape or cd inputs instead.  This is a very nice receiver, especially at its current discounted price.  I also own Yamaha receivers that are a bit more expensive and offer additional features like airplay.  Both produce excellent sound, and I find the HK to be a much more attractive presentation and the remote is definitely easier to use.

does anyone know the power consumption in use and standby?

Tested in real time using my Kill-A-Watt EZ.
0.3 to 0.4 watts on Standby.
45-49 watts watching Ender's Game in Dolby Digital 5.1 at -27db through Klipsch Quintet 5.0 Speakers.
Very Nice economical head unit. I prefer Harman/Kardon for it's super clean sound. This is a basic unit very few bells and whistles but is excellent value for the $$.

Is this machine ARC enabled? It seems so from the rear picture of the receiver, but the manual doesn't say anything about ARC. Thanks

the descriptions say 70W x 5 and 50W x 5 unless I'm reading it wrong.  Which is it?

Yes, you are right about that. The HarmanKardon web site says 70 watts per channel. Yet the specification sheet says 50 watts per channel. Regardless it's very loud. I have no way of quantify it with the product. 
But I think it is 50 watts.

I have a hearing loss but this thing is so loud that I have to lower the volume most of the times. It's a decent piece of receiver. 
The manual is not very helpful. But you can get it right after working with the OSD extensively. For example, you have to press AVR button then press the OSD to talk to it. 
I wish they have a much better manual.  Come with 3 HDMI connectors. And there are 7 others, Tape, DVD, CD, VID1, VID2, AUX1 and AUX2, in addition to AM/FM. There is a TV button that I can not figure it out what that's for. 
Hope this will help. BTW I bought it for $179.

Is this model 4K ready?

Nothing in the manual says anything about 4k. All it says is 3D and deep color, blue ray compatable.
