Is the picture on this site showing the back of the unit, the actual unit?  The Harman site shows a different picture for the back side.

The newegg picture is not a match to the actual back of the 1710.  Appears newegg has generic writeup for the series and used a different model for the backside photo.

Is it 4k pass through?

yes, it is 4k pass through.  you can find a press release from harmon saying the AVR line has it, if you google the model number.  also, you can download the spec sheet from harmon, and see it has 4k x 2k 
listed additionally.

Hello, I see the dimensions for the AVR 1710 from HK's website as Height 4-3/4" (121mm), Width 17-5/16" (440mm), Depth 11-13/16" (300mm) but do these figures include the speaker wire knobs and if not, how deep is the unit including them? I need to make sure it can fit into a cabinet with limited dimensions. Thank you

This DOES NOT include the speaker wire knobs. The knobs stick out an additional inch, making it a total depth of 13 inches.

Don't buy any of these models.  The quality is very poor and sound quality is horrible.  I thought I was upgrading from an onkyo and after tinkering with it for afew months and buying new speakers put my old onkyo back in use and returned the new speakers. Since then I have bought a yamaha and I'm very very pleased with the yamaha.  The HK sound has no power and no bass for midrange and having a sub only rely takes care of lows.  I am very disappointed with HK and it has been sitting on a shelf in my basement ever since mine is an avr1710 and I couldn't be more disappointed.  Extremely pleased with my yamaha the quality and clarity is superb.

Does this receiver have a phono input?

no. It does have an aux input, but that is for line level signals like what typically come from cd players, cassette machines, etc. Phono's are typically not high enough gain for this, unless you were to get a phone pre-amp...something pretty old school so not sure if there are any available these days.
