How fast is the read / write?

To answer this question, I ran the ATTO Disk Benchmark, which can be found on the Internet.  For medium to large file sizes (32 - 8,192 kilobytes (multiply by 1,024)) the read and write speeds are 119+ megabytes per sec.  In bytes per second, small files are transferred much more slowly.  You understand that real-world writes by Windows, and probably other O/S's, are also much slower because the O/S is simultaneously updating the disk journal and MFT.  In addition, because Windows may be writing many system and application files to the same disk at the same time, the effective transfer rate is typically in the thousands of bytes per second.  This is especially true of writes to the C: or System drive.  You can see this by looking at the Performance tab of Task Manager in Windows 8, 8.1 or 10 or by opening the Resource Monitor from that page.

If your iMac uses a laptop style hard drive, yes. Laptop style means the same form factor (dimensions) as this SSD. I have a MacMini and it would fit perfectly.
