Question 1

I ordered an Asus M5A99FX PRO R2.0 motherboard but looking at the memory chart they have for qualified vendor list  I dont see one for 8GB as one, I only 16GB but it has this model number so does this mean 16GB have to be installed at once for it to work? Im putting a AMD FX-600 if that makes a difference.

I am not familiarized with the components you have listed. I have been using Gigabyte motherboards and Intel processors for few years now.

However, I had compatibility issues in the past using Asus motherboard and an AMD processor. It took me a long time to find out what was wrong, because both of them, the Asus motherboard and the AMD processor were good; they just didn’t like each other.

To avoid these issues, go to the AMD website and look at the list of recommend motherboards for the AMD processor model you have. I STRONGLY suggest that you use one of those motherboards!

Then go to the selected motherboard web site and see if the memory you have works with the motherboard you selected.

Few pointers about memory:

- Windows XP 32-bit can only handle 4GB of memory, even if you physically have more than that installed in the motherboard.
- DDR technology requires two memory banks to work. That is, if you want 16GB you have to use two 8GB memory sticks.
- Some motherboards support different processors. The memory speed you have (in your case 1600), has to be compatible with the processor bus speed. It is ok to use a memory stick faster than required, but the other way around will cause problems.
- Same goes for operating voltages. There are DDR3s that work at 1.5V and others that work at 1.65V. You need to use the type that is supported by the motherboard you are going to use.
- Additionally, you can get more info on your memory at the Kingston website.

As you can see, there is not a quick answer and the memory selection depends on processor and motherboard. Do some research on the components you intend to use, to be sure that your project will work well.
