Is this tray used in conjunction with the original tray and can be selected if you have say photo paper in this tray and regular copy paper for normal use?

This is exactly the same tray as the one that is included with the two-tray model. The entire printer fits right on top of this new tray and the printer recognizes it immediately. There is one condition attached to using this second tray that is buried in the users manual. This second tray can contain only letter sized paper. Either tray can be selected by your printer driver, but custom paper sizes must be installed in the first (top) tray. In my application, I fill the bottom tray with letter sized bond and the top tray with 4x6 photo paper. Works fine. This means that envelopes or 8x14 paper must go in the top tray. After receiving this new tray I installed the paper the other way around (4x6 on bottom) and it wouldn't work. Had to find the user manual for the two-tray model to discover that only letter sized paper would feed from the bottom tray. And yes, that letter sized paper can be any type, like photo paper or card stock.

Does this paper tray handle legal size paper?

Yes, the CN548A can take legal size paper.  But don't make the expensive mistake I made.  I thought the 8600 applied to any of the 86XX family of printers.  I ordered 2 for my 2  8625 printers and found that they didn't fit the 8625.  Then discovered they were NOT RETURNABLE.  READ EVERYTHING CAREFULLY!
