Once I load my drivers in is it plug and play?

Well, that depends on what you mean by plug and play as to whether or not your system will recognize it. I am using two of these on two different Macs - a MacPro and a G5, both via eSata connection - and I had a compatibility issue with the PCI eSata controller on theMacPro - had to change brands of controller card, no problems with the new card. The problematic card would only see one of 4 drives, and it was random as to which one was recognized!

It was not the Icy-Dock - worked just fine when I swapped it onto the G5 eSata card. There was no compatibility issue with USB however (computer saw all 4 drives) on both computers. There are no drivers - it is up to the USB host controller or eSata controller to handle the device, which may or may  not require installation of a driver.

You should not lose any data like you did before - not sure what happened to you there - but I did not lose any data placing drives into the Icy-Dock (some with info, some without) - worked our just fine.

I do recommend getting the alternative bezels that offer better cooling if you are going to load the unit up with 4 drives unless they are NAS or Enterprise class drives. Not 100% necessary, but a good idea in my opinion.
