ToughArmor MB992SK-B 2x2.5" SATA Mobile Rack For 3.5"
Device Bays

Overview

Every year, technology is able to become more and more advanced and is constantly improving. Also, with being physically the smallest, and performing the best is the end goal of any storage system. This is why SFF (Small Form Factor) storage systems are becoming more popular due to its low power consumption and space-saving benefits. With the advent of recent solid state technology, this allows 2.5" SSD’s to easily achieve 500MB/sec in transfer rate, which overcomes the 3.5" SATA hard drives in every category except capacity. Therefore, maximize the capacity in a limited space becomes the most important task that many storage consulting firms are faced with often. For SFF systems, we introduce the Icy Dock MB992SK-B 2.5" SATA Mobile Rack solution for use in 3.5" device bays (Floppy bay). Suggested applications in Medical & Military systems, Media servers, and IPCs, approved by Tier 1 companies for the full metal construction used.

Complete Space Saver

Utilizing its small form factor, The MB992SK-B is perfect for use in industrial PCs, SMB SFF servers, mobile DVR systems, or even home servers. The ability to house 2 x SATA SSD or HDD in a single 3.5" bay makes it a valuable asset, such as, building small RAID 1 backups for SMB workstation or fast RAID 0 arrays for powerful personal computer. To keep cables from cluttering, a single SATA 15 power pin is used to ease installation. Save as much as space while maintaining the speed and capacity, which is the beauty of the MB992SK-B.

MB992SK-B

Protect Your Investments

Making sure your drives are in good hands and last as much as possible is carefully considered to any enterprise build and design. The MB992SK-B is capable of holding up in the harshest environments, with the heavy duty metal construction in the entirety of the body and its smaller components. It can be used various systems including: military and law enforcement deployment, as well as manufacturing conditions such as embedded control systems and factory automation systems. With the Full Metal design, the ToughArmor is perfect for industrial and medical devices that may require a flammability rating as the full metal material is considered to already comply with flammability requirements.

MB992SK-B

The metal material used grants heat dissipation transfer from the hard drives to the mobile rack. Multi-Flow Technology (MFT) effectively routes air flow correctly for excellent passive cooling, via ventilation slots on the front, rear, top and bottom (in multiple locations). Lastly, Anti-Vibration Technology (AVT) and EMI Grounding are used to provide a stable environment for the hard drives or SSD’s used to perform at its best.

MB992SK-B

Versatile Utility & Security

Bringing more utility your hard drives, a LED is installed into the front of the mobile rack to provide drive status information at all times. Active Power Technology (APT) allows each LED to be on only when a hard drive is inserted into the enclosure. For drive security, the eagle-hook lock system on the tray makes sure your hard drives will not eject when not needed. Additionally, the two-segment key lock provides extra protection to theft of hard drives as well as safeguards any sensitive data.

MB992SK-B

The brand new EZ Slide Micro trays make drive interchangeability and maintenance completely hassle free. The trays are also designed to accommodate 7mm to 9.5mm height hard drive and SSD, creating a 2.5" hot swap bay for any standard SATA hard drives and SSDs.

Great But Wish 2/6/2020 7:22:13 AM

Pros: I have about a half a dozen of these docks ...... and it has saved me a few times. It also makes it easy to clone a drive which I have done a bunch of times.

Cons: The only thing is I wish they would give me more screws to mount the drive, Or to remount the plate on the tray. Trying to find those screws is impossible.

Overall Review: Good Product just bought another one.....

Almost Perfect 5/5/2019 1:03:43 PM

Pros: Solid construction. Quiet--Fan noise is audible, but not objectionable, especially compared to most server RAID trays. Great cooling (4 drives run at about 34-37C at 24C ambient). Accommodates chubby drives like WD Velociraptors. SATA connectors work with locking cables. Drive lights show green with power, and flash red with activity.

Cons: WRONG power connectors. Stupidly wrong. Incomprehensibly wrong. Quality Control could be better (I had to re-shape two of the drive trays, which were out of square, to get the screws to line up, but fortunately I've done sheet metal design and fab, so this was no biggie). Not really a con, but you'll need VERY short screws to keep from interfering with the drive trays. The kit includes short screws, but Dell uses special quick-release screws that work with the SMT case, so I had to file down the Dell drive screws to be short enough to use. Also had to file the computer case, because this needs a full 38mm X 145mm opening (not a con, but FYI). Drive lights do NOT shut off or even change color when drive is removed. The outer shell has excessively sharp edges that should be knocked down in fab before painting, but trays themselves are not sharp.

Update: After less than a year of use, the fans both started squealing and slowing down. Since they have separate airflow paths, if one of them had locked, both drives on that side would have been toast, which for a RAID5 would have been unrecoverable. I replaced them with Sunons, which were a little louder (not a big problem in a server closet), but lowered the drive temperature down to 31C, and those have lasted ever since. They could definitely have used better fans.

Overall Review: Bought this for a Dell Optiplex 755 I'm making into a server. Two of the trays were not quite square, preventing the screw holes from lining up with the drive, so I had to tweak the cage a bit to get them to fit. Don't know if this was due to QC or damage, so I didn't take off a star. The biggest issue is THE POWER SOCKETS, for which this loses a star. Seriously Icy Dock?? Did you not think that if people are using SATA drives that they'll have SATA POWER PLUGS? The Optiplex 755 has ZERO Molex connectors! Almost all adapters are Molex-->SATA. Almost none are SATA power to a Molex device. The only one I could find that goes that way was the Kingwin SAC-05, which gives 2 Molex from 1 SATA, almost like it was designed to address this mistake. If I-D insist on using archaic Molex power plugs, they should include the adapter. Better to use SATA sockets, for which adapters (Molex-->SATA) are readily available.

Manufacturer Response:
Hello Victor,

Thank you for you're review, and I'm glad you're enjoying your drive cage. I wanted to address a few of the concerns you brought up.

Regarding the use of MOLEX, we do actually have a new model that uses SATA power connectors, the MB607SP-B. Like your model, it features a full-metal enclosure with 4 bays, but uses only a single SATA power connector rather than dual MOLEX.

As to your fan failure, I'm sorry this has happened to you. We design our products, particularly our ToughArmor series, to be as rugged and long-lasting as possible, so I'm sorry to hear the the fan has failed. Your product, as with all ICY DOCK products, is backed by a full 3-year warranty against all defects, and we would be happy to resolve this for you as per the warranty. Please contact us directly at tech@icydock.com to discuss this.

Perfect application for SAS SSDs 2/13/2019 1:38:48 PM

Pros: Loads up to 8x 2.5" SATA or SAS SSDs or HDDs (no more than 7mm tall). Has a pair of HD Mini SAS connectors (SFF-8643) to make cabling easier. The drive trays are all metal and are quite durable for their size and construction.

Cons: The mounting screws for the outer cage seem to interfere with the inner trays such that the trays may not slide cleanly. Use short screws if you can. Due to the form factor, drives are limited to 7mm height.

Overall Review: I use this with an LSI 9300-8i HBA in my rather compact workstation tower so I can fit a bunch of 1TB SSDs in a single 5.25" bay. This unit will require an 8-port (or more) HBA or RAID card with appropriate connectors and cables (or a "reverse breakout" cable to work with onboard SATA connectors) since it doesn't have the usual batch of SATA style connectors.

I like this one better then it's plastic cousin. 11/2/2018 1:10:31 AM

Pros: The slides for this unit work quite well.
This unit is perfect for SSD drives.

Cons: I have not found any cons yet.
I am a little worried about how long the fan will last and if I will be able to find a replacement if it dies.
I will have to keep an eye on the fan to be sure that it doesn't stop working.
It would be nice to have some kind of LED or something showing that the fan is working.

Overall Review: Overall I think I like this unit.
You do have to be sure to use the screws provided as other screws will be too long.

Great idea, cheap cooling solution 9/21/2018 8:48:31 AM

Pros: Very efficient use of a 5.25" bay. Drives slide in and out with ease.

Cons: The fan is NOISY. Even on low it makes an obnoxious amount of noise, and the fan header is INTERNAL, rather than external like some of their other units. This means if you want to replace it with a quiet fan (like the Noctua 40mm), you have to void your warranty. Minus 2 eggs for that.

Overall Review: Aside from the fan issue, it's a good unit. Just wish they put the fan header on the outside or used a quality fan.

Manufacturer Response:
Hello Ryan,

I'm sorry you've had this problem with your product. The fans on this model are generally considered quite quiet, and noise complaints are rare, so if the noise is an issue for you, it is likely caused by a defect in the fan. Your product, as with all ICY DOCK products, is backed by a full 3-year warranty against all defects, and we would be happy to resolve this for you as per the warranty. The fan on this model can be replaced by removing the back cover of the unit, which will not void your warranty as long as it is reinstalled again properly.

Please contact us at tech@icydock.com, our experienced tech agents will assist you in creating an RMA claim and getting this fan issue solved for you ASAP.

Solidly built, good for home use drive array 9/16/2018 1:18:48 PM

Pros: Full metal construction.
Drive power and activity indicators through cleverly designed in light pipes.
Lockable to prevent unauthorized drive removal.

Cons: Small fans are LOUD.
Can be easily described with one word - "airplane". Promptly disconnected as there is plenty of air movement in my system.
Spare drive trays are very pricey.

Overall Review: Consider buying small, super-quiet replacement fans as replacements, not a lot of airflow is required for many drives.
.. or just disconnect the fans.

excellent design, terrible 40x10mm 3pin fan; reverse it and use orings as rubber spacers reduces noise 5/22/2018 6:37:29 AM

Pros: Excellent design in all ways, but the (replaceable) fan.

Cons: even on the low fan setting its easily the most grating noise from a computer in the room because of the bad fan it comes with. Fan is easy to swap though, and quieter even if you just reverse it. I used some bits of rubber to isolate the sound of the fan from the metal a bit, which definitely helped.

Manufacturer Response:
Hello,

I'm sorry you've had this issue with your fan. Fan complaints with this model are uncommon, and usually if the noise is a problem it is caused by a damaged fan. Please ensure that your fan is not being hitting wires or anything else, and that there is no dust / dirt around the fan. If these issues are not leading to the fan noise, then it may be that your fan needs to be replaced. This model, as with all our products, is backed by a full 3-year warranty against all defects, and we can repair or replace the fan for you as per the warranty. We can be reached directly at tech@icydock.com

Nice But! 5/14/2018 9:36:49 PM

Pros: Metal construction. Solid build. Locking.

Cons: One star for cost., very pricey, and very noisy fans. I recently had to remove one due to excessive noise. 40x10 Noctua fans are $14 each to add insult to the high price. I don't think fans are really necessary for ssd's but...

Overall Review: I think the price is too high for what it is. I would definitely pass on buying it but I already have one in a previous build so I want same one so I can swap media ssd's between my two computers.
