Does this utilize a tray for each drive or is it trayless?

It has trays. Each drive screws onto the tray with 4 Phillips head screws. Drives must have bottom screw holes. Some do not, or do not have all 4, so watch out for that.

Do you still need a RAID controller card to pair with this chassis?

Accepted Answer

You just need the number of ports available that you plan to use with this chassis.  Most motherboards don't have 8 SATA ports, so it would be likely that you'll need some form of controller card with additional ports.  Not all ports on this rack need to be on the same controller either.  It is a one-to-one link between bay and port on MB/Controller.

Can the drives be hot-swapped?

Accepted Answer

Yes.  But remember that hot swapping has more to do with the capability of the individual drives and the controller that the drives are attached to, than the chassis/tray that holds the drive.

Question 4

Does the MB998SP-B have screw holes on the bottom (not the sides)? 
I have a custom built case and the only way to mount devices are via the bottom (all SSD and HD have similar bottom holes)

They have mount screw holes only in the sides to be mounted in 5.25" mounting bay, the icydock comes with screws to mount device.  Screws cannot be installed in top or bottom because they would interfere with drives in trays, as well if wrong screws are used they will also interfere with drive trays

My 2xSamsung 850 Pro 512GB work, but LED indication doesn't work on it (LED on 850 evo drives and kingston work well) need some ssd tweaks?

On the same controller 850 evo normally displays all indications. One addition - 850 pro does not display the power indication, but it shows the activity of the disk. I'll try to connect to another controller and report the resultsEnter an answer to this question.

Is this compatible with consumer level 3.5 HDD's?

Accepted Answer

No.  It is only compatible with 7mm 2.5" drives, commonly referred to as laptop drives.  I use this to pass consumer SSD's to virtual machines on my Hypervisor and it works great.

Question 7

Would this unit work with these drives?  Western Digital Bare Drives 2TB WD Green SATA III Intellipower 8 MB Cache Bulk/OEM Hard Drive WD20NPVX

This will ONLY accommodate up to 7mm drive heights.  Basically, most SSD drives and spinning disks up to 2TB in capacity.

Does the product have buttons on each bay to turn the drives ON/OFF?

No it does not and that wouldn't be a good idea. I like the idea of being able to turn them on and off as you choose, but you better off unmounting it thru your software for a safer storage. SSD drives while very much like USB sticks are vastly different depending on how you use them.

Question 9

Are there switches on each bay to turn the drives ON/OFF for hot swapping etc.? That's an important feature for me. I won't buy without that.

There is no switch.  You would just pull the drive, which is equivalent to cutting power via a switch.

What kind of cooling system does this device use?

The device uses dual 40mm rear cooling fans and metal heat dispersion for cooling.
