how big of area can it project without affecting the quality of the picture ?

We have a 11' x 6.5' screen with the projector at about 20'.  The picture is clear however the room can be fairly bright and the further out the projector is the dimmer the picture gets.  This is the only issue.  If you have good shades/blinds this wouldn't matter.  We have high windows without any shades or blinds.

What is the contrast ratio for this unit?

The paper work says it's a 15,000 to 1 contrast ratio.  I use mine almost every night on an old 8' pull down screen, and the screen has never looked better. I use it for br & dvd play back (with surround sound system{built in speaker as on all projectors sucks}) and I am quite satisfied with what I get. I haven't tried the 3D yet. so I don't know how well that works yet. But for the price it is, there is no complaints.

I have a small room. What is the closest focus range ?

According to the specs the minimal distance to screen(throw distance) is 3.9ft. At that distance the picture size would only be 30 inches.  So I would recommend being 4 feet or further away.

If you want to have a projector that close, I would recommend at short throw projector as you will have a much larger image that is able to be focused at a much closer distance than this model.
