Question 1

How long will the keyboard and mice run on the batteries?

I was a little skeptical about this purchase because of how little it cost, but it ended up being totally worth it.  The keyboard has a great signal distance and no sticky keys.  Both mouse and keyboard take one AA battery, and I'm still using the ones they sent with the shipment 3 months later. Finally, in the picture the backspace key is a 1x1 box, but mine was 1x2 which I was actually really happy about.

The only drawback to this purchase is that the mouse is relatively small compared to a hand.

Good purchase overall if you don't mind a small mouse.

Question 2

There is no on/off switch on the keyboard and when plugging in the dongle there is no pop-up to recognize the keyboard.  How do you get the computer to recognize the keyboard?

Mine worked OK. First thing, I turn on the mouse using the little switch on the bottom of the mouse. Then I turn on the computer with the dongle inserted. When the computer boots up both the mouse and the keyboard work.

The keyboard does not have a separate on/off switch. The keyboard has a battery that has to be maintained.

I returned mine because it did not work consistently but, as I recall, there is a switch on the mouse to turn the set fully on or off.  Other than that, I believe it is turned on and off automatically when the computer is in use.  For what it's worth, I recommend spending a little more for a Microsoft; watch the sales on Newegg, and you might get one for the SAME price or even less.  I replaced this with one of their's and it worked perfect out of the box, which is the experience I've had with all Microsoft devices of this type.
