May is a special time of year for Star Wars fans. All six live-action films were released in May, George Lucas’ birthday is in May, and, most importantly, Star Wars Day is in May! On May the 4th, fans from all over the world celebrate the beloved space film franchise by spreading the Force to others. By saying “May the 4th be with you” out loud on this day, you’ll be sure to elicit a response from any Star Wars fan within earshot.

Contrary to what you may think, Lucasfilm did not come up with the unofficial holiday. Instead, it was a newspaper headline in the London Evening News that read ‘May the Fourth Be With You, Maggie’ in honor of Margaret Thatcher becoming Britain’s first woman prime minister. The year was 1979 and The Empire Strikes Back still hadn’t been released, but the influence of Star Wars on popular culture was already evident.

Since then, fans have been celebrating May the 4th in many special ways, but it wasn’t until the first official Star Wars Day was held in 2011 that it became a worldwide spectacle. Now we have parades, costume contests, tribute movies, parodies, and sales. Lots and lots of sales!

To celebrate our favorite holiday involving a Wookiee, Newegg is having a huge sale on May the 4th. You’ll be able to get exclusive deals on core components, PC’s, laptops, peripherals, and much more. We’re also offering a major discount on select Star Wars digital game downloads where you’ll be able to save an additional 10 percent on already low prices.
