Perfect linux machine 3/8/2018 11:57:19 PM

Pros: Fast, no issues running Linux Mint or Ubuntu

Cons: Can't think of any

Overall Review: --------------------- Update 3/9/2018
Ended up with a 28" Samsung 4k U28E590D monitor (40" was just too large - never thought I'll say there is such a thing as too large of a monitor but running 40" at 4k you end up looking for the mouse pointer all over the place)
After over a year of almost daily and heavy abuse (I write code), still works like a charm.
At times I run anywhere between 5 - 8 virtual machines simultaneously (normally 2 GB of memory each, various operating systems), the machine handles the load very well. Also handles GNS3 network simulations very well (if GNS3 means anything to you - it's known for abusing resources)
Yes, the fan is audible while under heavy load, it's good to clean the air ducts once in a while so the thing can breathe.
No issues with overheating, all HW works perfectly
--------------------- end of 3/9/2018 update

Configuration (all HW came from newegg):
G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 32GB (2 x 16G) 260-Pin DDR4 SO-DIMM DDR4 2133 (PC4 17000) Laptop Memory Model F4-2133C15D-32GRS
Intel SSD Pro 6000p Series (512GB, M.2 80mm PCIe 3.0 x4, 3D1, TLC)
Final cost (here @ newegg): just under $1k
Keyboard: Kinesis Classic QD
Monitor: Samsung 48" HD - temporary, will be changing to a 40" 4k

Initially wanted to use (officially blessed by Intel) Patriot Signature Line 32GB (2 x 16G) 260-Pin DDR4 SO-DIMM DDR4 2133 (PC4 17000) Memory (Notebook Memory) Model PSD432G2133SK
But as of today (12/10/16), it seems to be unobtainable. The G.Skill seems to do just fine and was about $60 less (was on sale)

Initial install: 64 bit Ubuntu 16.04 LTS
Final install: 64 bit Linux Mint 18 LTS (Sarah)
Install options: encrypted HD, encrypted home directory
Install method: Patriot 32GB USB stick .iso image
Network: my phone wifi hotspot (Samsung Galaxy S7)

First impressions:
No problem with neither OS install (I am tired of Ubuntu Unity, hence the switch to Mint). All hardware is recognized and automatically configured by the install, long gone are the days of writing X configuration in vi or downloading Windows drivers. Yes, there is no need to download any drivers (eat my shorts, Microsoft) or any other MS features
No need to mess with any BIOS settings, other than setting the USB stick as the first boot device (install method)

Sitting about 3 feet from it, the running system is barely audible, the fan picks up with increased demand - compiling software, running Android emulator. Installed Android Studio - noticeable performance improvement compared to my vintage 2008 state of the art hardware

Not much more to say. Everything works out of the box, wifi, bluetooth, video, have no complaints
As the video is capable of running a 4k TV at 60 Hz (do get an HDMI 2.0 cable, otherwise it won't), will be switching to a Samsung 4k 40" TV for the monitor, I expect to get about 4x the real estate of my previous setup of 2 21" 1600x1200 flat panels. The current 1080p is a bit coarse from about 4 feet away.

Can't comment on game performance - I am not a gamer

Hope this helps to anyone considering it for their new Linux machine

great quad core with decent integrated graphics 12/19/2017 10:37:11 PM

Pros: games on a budget in a tiny form factor

Cons: intel integrated doesn't have the best graphics drivers and multiple monitor outputs isn't supported afaik

Overall Review: grabbed the black friday combo deal last year, this thing actually games really well if you make sure you use the ram in a dual channel config since the gpu dips into system ram and gpu's actually do benefit substantially from better bandwidth.

Awesome HTPC 12/4/2017 7:08:11 PM

Pros: I love this system. I had a mac mini as my HTPC but with only 4GB of memory it started to buffer way too much and became really bogged down. I bought this as a special where it came with 32GB of memory which is absolutely ridiculous for what I'm using it for and more than likely what you're going to use it for too.

Cons: The I/O ports are great for everything I need. I have it running into a Marantz receiver then to my Vizio 4k 60" TV. It works great and actually I use it from the couch with the Logitech K830 keyboard and couldn't be happier. I use it more than my laptop.

I'd love to give this thing 5 eggs but can't. It does everything you could possibly want from it but it's a real pain if you're a first time user. It has so many issues out of the box.

Firstly it has horrible driver support from Intel. You'll have to hit google, download a 1GB file with all the recent drivers. Then spend an hour going one-by-one installing them all. Then you're going to wonder why it's not working right with your receiver or TV and after a day of searching you'll find you need to download the Intel HDMI 2.0 firmware which isn't in their big packet. After you do those things you'll then want to download the intel overclocking software and use that. I had someone on reddit tell me what they did. If you adjust the voltage down just a little and limit the processor to 99% it disables the boost speeds and keeps the temps so low I haven't heard the fan kick on since I adjusted the settings two months ago. After all of this it is now an AWESOME machine.

Overall Review: Zero problems recommending this. It operates everything great. I don't game any but outside of that it's amazing.

Disposable item 12/4/2017 3:25:13 AM

Pros: Looks neat, small package

Cons: Fan goes bad, and there is no replacement I can find. Doesn't matter anyway because its not repairable anyway (no hobo upgrade, etc.)

Overall Review: So it lasted though the warranty period. Definitely the most expensive "desktop" I have ever owned considering what a short amount of time it lasted.

Im going to stick the SSD into a desktop and move on.

Suggest you don't waste your money.

Great Computer 11/12/2017 11:59:10 PM

Pros: -Sorta quiet. (you can hear the fan.)
-Plays games reasonably well. (especially on low settings. D3, WOW, SC2 all play super smooth up to about mid settings and perfect on low).
-Pretty quick boot. With an Intel 600p SSD it boots to login screen in 16 seconds.
-With 16Gbs of memory, this thing runs FL Studio 12 like a dream. You could probably get by with 8 gigs of ram but 16 doesn't cost too much more.

Cons: - The screw holes are fragile. I broke two screw holes (or whatever they're called) just by trying to get the case open. Other than that the case is solid and awesome.

Overall Review: I don't know if it's the OS (Windows 10) or the SSD (Intel 600p) or the motherboard or what but after about 8 months of use, the computer began to freeze. Pretty much only when playing games but there might have been a time or two outside of playing games. It doesn't happen very often, just once every 2 or 3 weeks but it's still not ideal.

Worth every cent 9/3/2017 9:53:46 PM

Pros: Compact powerhouse great for photo/video editing and advanced gaming. I also use it for 3D CAD modeling and all goes without a hitch.

Cons: Not much here. The Bluetooth seems to have a bit limited range compared to my other devices. Would be nice if they included a stand to hold it vertically but it's so small already so no big need really.

Overall Review: Pretty awesome how much memory and storage it can utility.

The fan noise is a deal breaker! 3/22/2017 8:05:18 AM

Pros: Powerful! Compact! Excellent WiFi signal! Feature packed! Awesome Visual BIOS!

Cons: Fan noise. Fan noise. Fan noise. I though people were complaining for no apparent reason, but once I got the unit I experienced the same thing and I don't know if I will be able to get used to it. When it's idle it's manageable, slightly louder then your average laptop but once you start CPU intensive tasks it starts to rev up and down. Although watching 4k videos on youtube it did fine, but when I was working in Visual Studio then it got really annoying. I am considering some options in terms of placement, even getting a box for it with a huge fan... but then it defeats the whole purpose of a small system. I really hope Intel listens and addresses this in the next NUC Skull iteration.
