No. It seems just fine without one. So is the Skull canyon version which has a pretty good video card.

Point being that even with a 4k gaming video card there is no fan in that version either and it runs just fine.

What is involved in assembling it.  Aside from RAM and an M2 PCIe Solid state drive, what parts will I need?  Does it need a heat sync?

Accepted Answer

You only need to add one or two SODIMM modules and an M.2 module or 2.5" SSD drive, though the slim models will only take an M.2. Lastly, you will need an operating system of your choice. You will only need a Phillip's screw driver. All other components are already assembled.

Yes, and if you have the right monitor you can run 3, specifically in my situation I use the dell U2415 and daisy chain from the thunderbolt port.

The i5 version is currently sold out through most distributors, including Newegg. The one retailer that has it in stock is selling the i5 version for a highly inflated price.  Normally the i5 should retail for about $460.

No, where would you put it? If you really had to you could open up the unit and put a fan on the bottom to blow inward and hook it up somewhere on a 12v line. Then prop the fan up a little from the bottom and sticky tape it together or something. But if you want to have something bigger and cooler, just buy something bigger and cooler.

what is normal CPU operating temperatures. I'm seeing upwards of 83C/181F. Is this normal?

Just anecdotal, but at idle, my i7 8559U averages 48C.  When running harder, core sensors differ, but top temps range between 74 and 87C.
