Question 1

I have a Dell Inspirion 537 desktop with win7 os.  Runs at 2.20ghz and would like to update it with something a little more responsive.  Will this thing do the trick?  Is it any better than the old dog I already have?

When buying a processor, there are a few things to check, not just the speed. Some processors are more effecient than others and so can do more with fewer GHz. Example I have an i7 that runs at 2.2 GHz and it is probably loads faster than the Core Duo you have. Here is a list of what you should check and where to check it.

1. Find what processor you actually have (model number) by right clicking my computer and then properties. Run that model number against the charts from PassMark Software's CPU benchmark list (google it)

Click on "Search for my CPU model"

Compare that "benchmark number (first column) with the benchmark of this E8500 (I'll save you the time, the passmark number for the E8500 is 2,306.)

If the E8500 has a higher number than your current processor then is is likely to be faster but we now need to check compatibility.

2. Using Dell's website you need to find the Front Bus Speed of the chipset in your motherboard to see if it can handle the 3.16 GHz that this processor gives. This may be more difficult to find. I had an Asus motherboard and the Asus support website was very easy to use and explained all the details of what I needed to do to change the processor.

3. Also on Dell's website you should see if you need to update your BIOS. If you don't know how to do this, then don't worry about it, Done wrong, it can compromise your motherboad for good.

4. Make sure you have the right tools to change the processor. youtube helps.

I would like to tell you that if you don't see any information about a CPU fan/cooler then it will not include either a fan or a cooler and you will have to buy it separately

well i'm thinking of getting this, will i have to upgrade anything else to upgrade it into my PC, its an dell inspron 530s, I've  only upgraded the graphics card in it?

I assume you are replacing an E2160... If so, this will be a very good upgrade - almost twice the CPU performance. Both chips are 65 Watt TDP, so your existing CPU cooler should be okay. Just make sure to clean the cooling block well (top and bottom). Older PCs can collect a lot of dust in the CPU cool fins and fan. It's a good idea to clean all this well. Also remove all the old thermal past from the bottom of the cooler block and clean it well. Then apply new thermal past before you reseat the cooler.

Nothing else should need to change (as long as the BIOS on the motherboard recognizes the new chip). This should give a nice boost in performance. Enjoy.

Chipsets exist within the motherboard, not the CPU.  So I'm sorry but the question does not make sense.

What you should be concerned with is "does the Intel G41 chipset support this processor?"

The answer can be found on the motherboard mfr web site.  They provide CPU compatibility for their motherboards.  Look for your motherboard and see if this CPU is on the list

Sorry, I don't have your particular video card, but card compatibility is much more a motherboard issue than a processor issue. I have an old nVidia card in my system and it works fine.

Is this real? Also is it actually 3.1 GHz...? Can I run most modern games with this along w/ GTX 750 ti Like overwatch

First, it is a real CPU that runs at 3.167GHz. It is an older processor, a Core 2 Duo. It is one of the original dual core processors. The specifications on this chip states that it has 6MB of L2 cache, which is on board cache. The more L2 cache, the better the chip will run. It will require an older motherboard that supports the LGA775 pin out. These are older motherboards. Most motherboards that support the LGA775 Socket may not support newer SDRAM. The CPU will support up to 1333MHz RAM, but it is possible that the motherboard will only support up to 800HMz RAM, and might be limited to 8GB of RAM. The bottom line is that there are other factors than the speed of the CPU that may give you less than the desired result in your gaming experience. Motherboard, RAM, Video capability, all contribute to a good gaming experience. Since you only referred to the CPU and did not ask or suggest what other hardware you have to go with this CPU, I have my doubts as to your satisfaction with this cpu. The CPU is only one part of the equation and you have not addressed the other major parts in your question. Hope this helps.

U don't have to reformat a thing when upgrading processors.  The only time ya need to do this when ya use a different motherboard.

My Acer G43T-AM V:2.0 mother board crashed, couldn't find an exact replacement - found an Acer G45T/G43T-AM3 V1.0 board. Is this CPU compatible? And would I need to reformat the original boot drive?

It looks like they use the same socket LGA 775 it's an Intel Core 2.  You also have to check to see if it uses the same Memory.  As for the Hard Drive it should Boot up, but depending on the Drive I would replace that too, especially if you want a fast SSD.  If you didn't set this one up, I would find a friend that has, or take your time and read up on everything and take it slow.  MB, Processor, Memory, and then see if it works.  You should get a message saying it's looking for the HHD.  Good Luck!  ALC
