Does this processor come with its own heat sink and fan?

Yes!The stock heat sink and fan is just fine for everyday stuff however, if you are a gamer you will want to consider a better heat sink,I am running a Coolermaster Hyper 212 EVO on mine never gets above 100F no matter how much video,games,DVD burning I do with it,this heatsink is hard to install ,you have to take out your motherboard,and is a 120mm fan will not fit in a small narrow case. Have Fun this is a super CPU for the money!

Others have stated that this processor comes with a heat sink and fan. Do I need some thermal compound to mount this? Or does it come already mounted and ready to go out of the box?

The heatsink comes with thermal compound already applied. If you want higher quality thermal compound you can buy some and clean what is already on there with some rubbing alcohol. Otherwise it works to keep it cool at a stock clock

I didn't buy a dedicated graphics card for my computer build. I used the graphics processor built in to the CPU.  It was adequate for my needs.

Is it worth upgrading from an i5-3570k?

If you do you're gonna have to get a new motherboard, and if you get a new motherboard I suggest getting a z97 because if you decide to upgrade again then you will be future proofing yourself by having something compatible with Broadwell.

If you don't mind doing that then yes it will help a little bit. I've noticed better performance from this CPU but it won't exactly blow your mind.

How tall is the stock cooler? (how much clearance is needed)

I do not have a measuring tool handy while answering this, but I would guess by eyeing it and say the heat sync and the fan go out about two to three inches, I hope that helps to answer your question

Is this 4690 Compatible with Z87 and Z97 motherboards as stated for the 4590 processor?

It 100% depends on your motherboard. I recommend checking with your motherboard manufacturer the make and model and check their CPU comparability guide. You may need to update your bios before you update your CPU.

The stock heatsink is getting mixed reviews.

The only game of any signficance is Rift and only for an hour or two at a time.

Other than that it is just netflix and intellij.

Yes, the stock heatsink will probably be fine for that purpose.  You might be able to extend the life of the CPU by buying a higher quality heatsink, but if you're just using it for light gaming and netflix you dont need an aftermarket heatsink.  I don;t know anything about intellij, so i cant comment on that.

im going to be using this for gaming along with a 2gb gpu and 16 gb ram, is this a good choice or do i need more to be able to get medium or high setings in anytype of game? thank you in advance :D

well right now with this processor I am running watch dogs on medium settings with no problem and I'm sure I could probably run it on high settings but it would not have a very high frame rate but when you're buying a processor you often wanna keep in mind the ideas of what you're going to be doing so if you're going to be gaming you might wanna look for an unlocked processor cuz I realize that when I bought this and I realize that I cannot overclock the processor

can you play destiny 2 using this, assuming you have a GPU that satisfies their requirements ?

Yes... as long as you have the rest of the requirements... memory, etc.  As with any game there are a lot of setting inside the game related to performance depending on your hardware... so there are a lot of other variables. Even if you have fantastic GPU you’re not going to run at super high resolution with heavy anti-aliasing if you have an i5 and 8gig ram. Here are ‘reconnebded’  specs for that game - and recommended typically means minimum.
