what is the best cooling device for this CPU?
I'm afraid to get the wrong one.

It depends on how cool you want it. The main thing to look for is a fan that will fit the LGA 2011 socket. The next thing you need to be aware of is, depending on your motherboard's layout of the ram, if you use memory that has a heatsink built in you need a fan that won't interfere with the "fins" on top of them.

The fan that I bought for this CPU is the Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO - CPU Cooler with 120 mm PWM Fan. It has a very high rating here at Newegg and I haven't had any problems with it. One thing to be aware with this fan is that it's very tall, so you'll need to make sure  there is room. I have the Cosmos S case with a fan built into the side and it's a very tight squeeze.

Question 2

Did I miss an option to add the heatsink to the package?  Are the heatsinks sold separately for this processor?  If so, why this one and not your others.

From all the research I had done about these processors is that they need larger heatsinks to avoid damage from overheating. Its not cost effective for them to send one large enough nor do they want to send one that is below requirements. I went ahead and bought the Corsair H100i for mine, it's a sealed liquid cooler so it's an easy install and works wonderfully! With this processor I can run 3 decently high demand games and barely break 25% cpu usage, and only gets to about 35*c. Anything else just ask!

Why are people giving this a lower rating because it doesnt come with a heatsink and fan?  Its clearly in the description. No Fan.

This processor is HEDT high end desktop  it's  usually goes into gaming rigs or high performance computing workstations why would anyone want to use cheap heatsink Intel ships normal processors with? I would throw away heatsink anyway! So nowadays You can buy closed loop watercolling for cpu like Corsair H50 or better and never worry about heat issues, plus its quiet and lasts 50000 hours or more also as i'm writing this review my 3820's temp is 24C and it never goes higher than mid 30s overall this processor is a gem between price/performance /capabilities such as 40 pciE 3.0 lanes quad channel mem controller 22nM die

Sounds like nonsense to me ... each mobo needs drivers specific to that mobo and physical addressing.  As you know all hardware and mobos have hardware with REAL physical  addressing. BIOS and drivers handle ALL CALLS from and OS to access the mobo hardware, ie SATA ports.
It may be true that there are better Raid controllers, but a mobo, raid is done in software. You need to add a read raid card, such as is done in servers.

I currently have this product and am using it with a GIGABYTE GA-X79-UD3 LGA 2011, I currently can't use windows 8 and obviously won't be able to go up to 10 when it comes out. Do I need a new motherboard, CPU or both? I would still like to be able to use my ram and graphics card GIGABYTE GV-R787OC-2GD Radeon HD 7870 GHz Edition 2GB 256-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card. thanks

You should be able to use 8 and 10 with this chip and your mobo. There might be other issues stopping you from upgrading. However, if you do upgrade, I would recommend getting a new chip and mobo at the same time, or search for mobo that has the LGA2011 socket. This processor is a beast and should be able to handle just about anything you throw at it.

Is it worth upgrading my old LGA 1366 to get some benefits from the LGA 2011 cpus like this one?

The LGA 2011 is a different socket than the one you have. You would need to replace the processor, motherboard and memory in the least.

How far have you overcloked the cpu?

I haven't been able to do anything great with mine.  I am pretty sure I got a "dud" though.  I've only been able to get it to about 4.5 stable.  It could be the motherboard, but who knows.  I think that's pretty much the lower limit on these chips though.

Question 9

I have a dual motherboard and want to put two CPU's in it.  I checked, and the CPUID (powershell) doesn't show a "Stepping" (revision) level. Does anyone know if I could just buy one today and pop that next to it's sibling? I asked on Tom's Hardware and got 0 answers :(

It is my understanding that different steppings may work together, but there's always the possibility that some error will occur due to differences between the processors. Matching steppings maximizes compatibility basically.

Can this intel core work for SuperMicro X8STE Motherboard?

It doesn't look like it. From what I looked up with that motherboard is the chips etc is an LGA1366. That's the type of chip you'd need to go with. This one is an LGA2011. The LGA2011 is actually one of the larger chips.
