My box has 12th Gen Intel Core i9- 12900K with NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 and DDR5, 2x32GB @4400MHz, liquid cooled.  I'm thinking the i9-1300KF should be a drop in replacement offering significant multi-thread performance enhancement, but I'm not a hardware guy, and have no experience in knowing what the gotchas might be.  Please advise?

Depends on the motherboard. You would have to check the manual on the motherboard's website. Generally speaking, yes, it should work, but you are wasting your money. In terms of gameplay, you won't be able to tell the difference between a 12th & 13th gen processor. Save your money, or upgrading the video card instead if you really need to spend it.
