Question 1

Can someone explain what the specs mean when it says?

Storage
Serial ATA      1 x SATA 6.0Gb/s

I know someone said that a 2.5" drive CANNOT be installed, but the specs seem to indicate otherwise, some clarification would be nice.

There is an internal SATA port on the motherboard, however its use is of limited use.  The physical dimensions of the NUC do not support the installation of a 2.5 inch drive internally. What could be done, is that you could route a SATA cable (that you provide) from the motherboard, outside the NUC, to connect to a drive or external system that contains drives (JBOD enclosure).  I have not used it, as it would require me leaving the top off the NUC.  Since the top is used as a means of conduction heat transfer, I wouldn't necessarily recommend leaving the top off.  But it might be ok, it is something you would need to monitor.  The other possible gotcha of using that port to connect to a JBOD (probably require a SATA-ESATA in most cases cable) is that you want to make sure it supports port multiplication in case your external enclosure is a one-to-many connection.  In other words if your external enclosure is a single port in (typically ESATA), and more than two drives inside, it is most likely using a port multiplier.  Not all SATA ports/drivers support this.  Since this is the native INTEL chipset most likely supplying the connection...I think you would be ok but I haven't ever done it or looked into it so I can't say.

If all you want to do is figure out what you need to install to boot the thing, buy a mSATA drive.  I know it sucks that you have to spend money on a drive when you probably already have a 2.5 laying around but you won't be disappointed when you boot the thing.  I have a 128GB m500 Crucial and it boots Windows 8.1 from cold to Metro Screen in about 7 seconds.  I've built a lot of systems and I've never seen anything come up that fast.

Does it have wifi and does it include the CPU?

CPU is included, determined by the model you choose.

RAM is not included, separate purchase.

Storage is not included, you need to purchase an appropriate SSD

Wifi/Bluetooth is not included, you need to purchase an appropriate adapter. The Wifi and Bluetooth antennas are built in and ready for attachment to the adapter you choose however.

how big is the hard drive is?

It does not ship with a hard drive.  Also, because of the small form factor, you have to put an mSATA hard drive in it.  It will not take a standard hard drive.

Question 4

Is there a way to utilize the infrared sensor? I'm planning to use this box as HTPC and direct interaction with remote control would be a icing on the cake

Hi Yuri Yes the I sensor works great. Just make sure you install the drivers. Win7/Win8 will not recognize it automatically. Does the Intel NUC D34010WYK KIT have a microphone input? 
If not, is there such a thing as a USB device with mic input, which can be USB'd to the NUC as a mic input?

the nuc does not have a mic input, but you can buy a headset that comes with a mic. my headset currently has a usb plug in and its buy logitec. hopefully this helps.

Question 6

Is this unit capable of providing 5.1 SPDI/F output - perhaps through the headphone jack?  I want to connect it to the RCA digital input on my 5.1 receiver.  Thanks.

Hi Matthew,

I don't believe the headphone jack supports 5.1SPDI/F output. However there are adaptors that you can purchase that go from optical to digital RCA. Here is a link to one. I searched on Newegg but could not find any adapters. Google this text -- C2G / Cables to Go 40018 Coaxial to Optical Digital Audio Converter -- This should solve your sound issue.

No. I read somewhere that Intel is working on a model where you could add 2.5" HDDs but for now, you are limited to mSATA SSDs.
