Yes, it does come with a heatsink and fan.  The box would be very small indeed were this not the case - the chip itself is visible through that little square hole in the top, and the other 95% of the box is the heatsink and fan. :)

Will this processor work on any motherboard with a LGA socket?  I have a Dell computer and I may want to update the CPU.

LGA 1155 ONLY I would suggest contacting Dell and ask if this CPU is compatible with your motherboard they might be the same socket type but they might not play well together

Yeah, I think it should.

Supermicro states:
Single socket H2 (LGA 1155) supports
    Intel® Xeon® E3-1200 & E3-1200 v2
    series, 2nd and 3rd Gen Core i3
    processors***, Pentium, Celeron

Any mini ATX motherboard suggested for this processor? I will be using windows server 20012R2 for VMs and NAS server.

I used the SuperMicro MBD-X9SCM-F-0 for my recent build.  It currently is running Hyper-V 2012 with 32GB of Unbuffered ECC RAM.  Pretty stable so far (knock on wood).  I have about 12 VMs running with 4 1TB Seagate drives on RAID 10 Fakeraid.  I really like the IPMI feature on the board, useful because it can be easily discover over the network and you can manage the host without direct monitor attached.

Will most 1155 socket motherboard work for this chip?  Do you have to get a specific mobo?

Mine has been on 3 different boards, but there are a lot of 1155 boards out there. I wouldn't buy a board without checking the specs first.

Does the CPU support memory OC to 1866 or 2133?

I cannot find the answer anywhere.

The CPU doesn't necessarily depict whether you can OC memory from 1866 or 2133.  This factor will depend greatly on the motherboard you choose, and the quality/type of RAM.  If you can find a motherboard that supports overclocking, and RAM that has the capability to be OC, then slap this processor in and it should work.

Hello All,

I am in the middle of either purchasing a server from Dell or Cisco vs building my own whitebox than can support ESXi 5.1 for Cisco VOIP implementation. This will be for a home-lab but I would run CM, CUC, and IM Presence Server for Jabber. Please help so I don't run into any issues that would turn me to burning more money. I see that Bntron and Technobot have successfully done this. Please help me. Which way should I go, keeping in mind that I also want to save money? Thank you in advance.

I recently purchased this CPU along with an Asus barebones server for an ESX home lab.  Currently I have a vm running zoneminder with 5 cams along with a second vm running an openfire chat server and hosting a gallery3 website.  This CPU easily handles it all with plenty of room for growth.  Hopefully this helps you decide which way to go.
