Designed for entry-level servers, the Xeon E3110 offers utility and versatility for small business owners or users looking to build an advanced home network. Run all of your programs at reliable speeds with Intel 64 Architecture and a 1333MHz FSB. The processor also provides outstanding performance for 32-bit and 64-bit applications. You’ll also appreciate the lower thermal design power which allows the chip to run at cooler temperatures for thermal-sensitive spaces.
You also get Intel Virtualization Technology hardware enhancements that support software based virtualization. It works with VMware, Virtual PC and XenSource and products from an increasing number of software vendors. Combine these with the processor’s great power efficiencies and you can run virtual environments on blade systems with fewer cooling challenges which gives you maximum power and services per square foot of server space. In today’s fast-paced world, information management is more important than ever. Build your first server with the E3110 to handle that demand today!
Dual-core Processing with 6MB L2 CacheThe Intel Xeon E3110 processor features dual complete processor cores in one physical package. Significant performance headroom, especially for multi-threaded applications, helps boost system utilization through virtualization and application responsiveness. Its 6MB L2 cache increases efficiency of L2 cache-to-processor data transfer, maximizes main memory to processor bandwidth and reduces latency.
Supports Intel Virtualization Technology (Intel VT)With Intel VT, one hardware platform functions as multiple “virtual” platforms. For business, Intel VT offers improved manageability, limiting downtime and maintaining worker productivity by isolating computing activities into separate partitions. In the home, Intel VT allows creating unique user environments for multiple family members using the same platform simultaneously.
Intel Extended Memory 64 Technology (Intel EM64T)Enhances next-generation IA-32 platforms with 64-bit addressability and related instructions, allowing flexibility for both 64-bit and 32-bit applications and operating systems.
Execute Disable Bit (EDB)Intel's Execute Disable Bit function can prevent certain classes of malicious "buffer overflow" attacks when combined with a supporting operating system. Execute Disable Bit allows the processor to classify areas in memory where application code can execute and where it cannot. When a malicious worm attempts to insert code in the buffer, the processor disables code execution, preventing damage or worm propagation.
Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology (EIST)EIST allows the system to dynamically adjust processor voltage and core frequency to decrease average power consumption and average heat production. Combined with existing power saving features, EIST may provide an excellent balance between providing power when you need it and conserving power when you don’t.
Pros: Great overall processor, to say the least. The value for the dollar is still great, despite being priced higher than the functionally equivalent e8400. I found I was able to use fairly low voltages to achieve my 24/7 overclock, keeping temps in range and also leaving headroom for experimentation later. Details: E3110 4005mhz, 1.3v, 34c idle, 45c load (Realtemp, Orthos) Thermalright TRUE Black Push/Pull Maximus II Formula 4gb Mushkin eVCI DDR2-1066 Radeon 4850 CF Seagate 7200.11 1.5TB Corsair TX650 Oh yes, and the requisite Lian Li (PC-A17b)
Cons: None so far. The RAM is the factor "limiting" the OC at the moment.
Overall Review: I paid the extra $10-15 for the xeon name and lower operating voltages at stock. A "cool" factor, mostly.
