...so reading Scott S's reply below, does this mean two of these can be installed on a duo LGA 2011 socket MB (giving one 48 total processor threads)?  That would make for one seriously powerful CGI workstation especially considering the amount of memory some of these boards support (up to 768GB).

Yes, you can... I have two of these on an ASUS Z9PE-D8 WS motherboard for a total of 48 threads... Cinema 4D pegs all 40 threads to 100% during renders... total beast. The only thing I was slightly disappointed on was that the listed Turbo speed does not ramp up when you're pegging all the cores/threads to 100... if I'm in After Effects just doing some light threaded stuff, it will ramp up to the turbo clock, but it locks at 2.7 when all cores/threads are maxed... I did some research on the web and found that's the case with these chips

Does this Processor have 12 physical cores? Or 12 cores including the ones from hyperthreading? If it has twelve physical cores, does that mean it has 12 logical cores for a total of 24 cores?

Yes it has 12 logical cores and 24 cores with hyperthreading!  Windows will see it as a 24 core processor in task manager.

I installed/deinstalled these multiple times in multiple computers. It's not very hard once you know what to expect, and the machine is pretty tough - not as risky as some would have you believe, just follow the directions, and keep track of your screws (there are explicit youtube videos that take you through every step). The first time took me 30 mins, after that about 10-15. I had a 10 core that died, the 12 cores have been working flawlessly.

Can I use this CPU with my ASUS Sabertooth X79 MB?

According to ASUS CPU support page, Intel Xeon E5-2697 v2 (2.7G,130W,L3:30M,12C,HT) is supported but they also have a note on this processor that reads:

*Intel Xeon Processor Family is designed for servers. Some features may not support when installed on X79 series chipsets. For more details, refer to ASUS support site.

Also note that most motherboards don't come with the latest BIOS so make sure your BIOS is upgraded to the required version (Ver. 4502)! otherwise, the MB will not boot at all.

it should work, does it use ddr3 ram and motherboard is socket lga2011, and not not lga 2011v3 socket that uses ddr4 ram

Yes, this is the same processor Apple uses for the Mac Pro's. I swapped out a 4 core for this one in January, no problems at all. This should work fine for whatever hackintosh you want to set up.

What about cooling?  Does this processor ship with heat sink and fan or just heat sink?  Is there a 3rd party CPU fan that works with it?

Will this product work with a supermicro X9SRi-F motherboard? I recently tried the Intel Xeon E5-1650v2 and I got an error message:

UNSUPPORTED HARDWARE DEVICE: CPU  family 6 model > 59

It also says before that the CPU is a model 62. First time I've seen this error and I'm not sure where to get the spec that tells me the Family model. Any help would be great appreciated.

no I think the 2011 chip will only work for Xeon e5 2000 series ,
