Question 1

Will this be compatible with my Mitsubishi DLP TV? My TV has the checkerboard 3D format.

Honestly, don't waste your money. I have the same TV and it kept trying to make the 3d split screen. I contacted IOGEAR and besides the fact that there customer service is awful, they eventually told me that the device is broken even though it worked on other TVs. Don't buy this. It'll just give you a headache.

Question 2

Does this switcher perform automatic switching when it senses a new HDMI device signal or do you HAVE to manually switch it every time you change to a different input device?

You power on. You activate 3D. You select which hdmi to pass through. Good product but very manual.

Question 3

Does the "upscaling" convert simple 
2D 480p to 2D 720p 
and 
2D 720p to 2D 1080p ?

I do not care about and I do not want 3D or other "enhancement".

ALL I want is something to upscale standard DVD player 2D 480p output to either 2D 720p or 2D 1080p.

NO 3D...NO "enhanced" video other than the upscaling.

Neither the specs nor reviews are clear on this...they seem to strongly suggest you have to enable the 2D to 3D feature to get ANY upscaling, and some say there are video problems in the 2D to 3D and/or "enhancement" features which would thus make upscaling a meaningless exercise.

The unit automatically sets up enhancement. you have to press 2D or 3d buttons to turn it off. I have found that on Blu-ray the enhancement is not needed.  The picture you get from the  unit is excellent, but for standard DVD's using the enhancement feature does improve for poorly made movies or home Video. 
If  enhancement  plus upscaling is what you want spend the thirty bucks for this. It upscales to 1080 on all.
